As of now, the only book relevant to Magh Mela that is available in the market is a reproduction of the chapter on Magh Mahatmaya appearing in Padma Purana. But, that is purely mythological in content and does not deal with many aspects of the Magh Mela as it plays out in Allahabad. Everybody has heard of Kumbh Mela. But, how many of us have heard of Magh Mela? Magh Mela is an incredible annual phenomenon in Allahabad (Prayag) from time immemorial. It is a monthlong Hindu festival that is celebrated in the month of Magh at Sangam or the confluence of rivers Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical river Saraswati. Magh Mela is marked by (snan) ritual bathing and taking up temporary residence near Sangam in the month Magh and leading an austere life devoted to prayers and rituals (kalpavas) according to their vows. The month of Magh begins with Paush Purnima and ends with Magh Purnima. But, the Magh Mela begins on Makkar Sankranti or Paush Purnima (whichever is earlier) and ends with Maha Shivaratri because of administrative reasons. Lord Vishnu is the presiding deity of Allahabad as well as the month of Magh which is considered to be the most auspicious month for Hindus. Allahabad is also known as Tirthraj Prayag. In other words, Allahabad is the king of pilgrimage sites for Hindus. Separate chapters are devoted to the most auspicious months of the Hindu calendar in the Puranas in the form of Vaishak Mahatmaya, Kartik Mahatmaya and Magh Mahatmaya explaining the significance of each month. The most important ritual for Vaishak is charity (daan). Similarly, the main ritual for Kartik is offerings in the form of earthen lamps (deep daan); and, the main ritual for Magh is ritual bathing (snan). Therefore, Magh Mela is essentially a bathing festival coupled with kalpavas. And, Tirthraj Prayag is the sacred land that has been designated for Magh Mela by Hindu scriptures. - Description: आरम्भिक काल में इस्लामी आन्दोलन समाज के कमज़ोर और पीड़ित व्यक्तियों की आकांक्षाओं को व्यक्त करता था। इसलिए यह जाँच–परख दिलचस्पी से ख़ाली नहीं होगी कि उसके आरम्भिक समर्थक कौन से लोग थे। अब्दुल–मुतअल–अस्सईदी नाम के एक मिस्री लेखक ने इस पर शोधकार्य किया है। वे कहते हैं कि नवस्थापित इस्लाम मूलत: युवकों का आन्दोलन था। जिन लोगों की उम्रें दर्ज मिलती हैं, उनमें एक बड़ा बहुमत हिजरत के समय 40 से कम उम्र का था। इन लोगों ने उससे कम–से–कम 8 या 10 साल पहले इस्लाम अपनाया था। पैग़म्बर मुहम्मद ने मक्का के अमीरों की जो तम्बीह की थी कि वे ज़ख़ीराबाज़ी न करें और अपनी दौलत पर न इठलाएँ, वह कुचले हुए लोगों, ग़ुलामों और यतीमों आदि को आकर्षक लगती थी। फिर भी उनके समर्थक सिर्फ़ इन्हीं वर्गों से नहीं आए। वे सभी ख़ाली हाथ लोग या ज़ोरदार क़बीलाई सम्बद्धताओं से वंचित तलछटिए लोग नहीं थे। वास्तव में उनमें से बहुत से लोग अग्रणी क़बीलों के थे। जिस तरह हमारे अपने वक़्त में सामाजिक और राजनीतिक प्रक्रियाओं के प्रति जागरूक मगर वंचित होने के अहसास से भरे मध्यवर्गीय बुद्धिजीवी सामाजिक रूपान्तरण में एक महत्त्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाते हैं, उसी तरह पैग़म्बर मुहम्मद के अनुयायियों ने भी निभाई। ये लोग भी मक्का के समाज के मध्यवर्ती स्तरों से ताल्लुक़ रखते थे जहाँ एक ख़ासी बड़ी सीमा तक शत्रुतापूर्ण वर्गीय सम्बन्ध पैदा हो चुके थे।

‘गुरुग्रन्थ' की एक ऐसी अन्य विशेषता, उसमें संगृहीत विविध रचनाओं के क्रमदान में भी पाई जा सकती है। उसमें आए हुए पदों को कोई ऐसा शीर्षक भी दिया हुआ नहीं मिलता जो विषयानुसार निश्चित किया गया हो तथा जिसके सहारे हमें उस मत-विशेष का परिचय मिल सके जिसे उनके रचयिताओं ने प्रकट किया होगा। उनका क्रम केवल रागानुसार ही स्थिर किया गया जान पाता है जिससे इस विषय में, हमें कोई भी सहायता नहीं मिल पाती। हमें यहाँ प्रत्यक्षत: केवल इतना ही पता चल पाता है कि सिक्ख गुरुओं ने, तथा कतिपय सन्तों, भक्तों ने एवं सूफियों तक ने भी एक ही प्रकार के गीत गाए होंगे।

- Description: भक्ति, तीर्थ, धर्म, ब्रह्म और मोक्ष की अवधारणा को समझे बिना भारत और उसकी चेतना को समझ पाना सम्भव नहीं है। भारत में जहाँ कहीं भी देवनदी के एक से अधिक प्रवाह एक साथ मिलकर बहने लगते हैं, धाराओं का वह मिलन-स्थान ‘प्रयाग’ बन जाता है। हिमालय क्षेत्र में पंचप्रयाग तीर्थ ऐसे ही बने हैं। परन्तु जहाँ गंगा, यमुना और सरस्वती की तीन धाराओं का मिलन होता है, उस स्थान को प्रयागराज कहा गया है। यहाँ प्रतिवर्ष माघ स्नान के लिए, प्रति 6 वर्ष पर अर्धकुम्भ स्नान के लिए, प्रति 12 वर्ष पर कुम्भ स्नान के लिए और प्रति 144 वर्ष पर महाकुम्भ स्नान के लिए असंख्य लोग आते हैं। भाषा, जाति, प्रान्त आदि के भेदों को भुलाकर एक जन-समुद्र उमड़ आता है। भारतीय जीवन पद्धति में अमृतत्त्व का अनुसन्धान मानव जीवन का चरम लक्ष्य रहा है। अर्धकुम्भ, कुम्भ या महाकुम्भ के अवसर पर एकत्र होने वाला अपार जनसमुदाय सम्भवतः अमृत से भरे कुम्भ की अपनी अव्यक्त अभिलाषा को लेकर ही यहाँ पहुँचता है। प्रयागराज भारत का प्रमुख सांस्कृतिक केन्द्र होने के साथ ही भारतीय सात्विकता का सर्वोत्तम प्रतीक भी है। कुम्भ सम्बन्धी पौराणिक मान्यता का सर्वाधिक प्रचार शंकराचार्य ने किया था। लेकिन आदि शंकराचार्य के पूर्व भी प्रयाग में कुम्भ का आयोजन होता रहा है। इसका सबसे पुराना ऐतिहासिक वर्णन ह्वेनत्सांग (7वीं सदी ई.) ने किया था। उस समय प्रयाग के त्रिवेणी संगम पर दुनिया भर से ऋषि-मुनि, राजा-महाराजा, सामन्त, कलाविद् और धर्मप्राण लोग लाखों की संख्या में एकत्र हुए थे। कुम्भ के दौरान संगम तीर्थ पर एक स्नान दिवस पर भक्तिभाव से कई बार इतने लोग जमा हो जाते हैं कि उनकी संख्या दुनिया के कई देशों की कुल जनसंख्या से भी अधिक होती है। श्रद्धालु श्रद्धा और भक्ति की एक अदृश्य डोर में बँधकर खिंचे चले आते हैं। श्रद्धा और आस्था का यह आवेग सदियों से चली आ रही हमारी परम्परा का हिस्सा है। प्रयागराज और कुम्भ की गौरवशाली परम्परा के बारे में जानना एक सुखद अनुभूति है।
