शाम ढल चुकी है, रात को चाँद की प्रतीक्षा है। विरह की अग्नि हर प्रेमी को अपने आगोश में ले रही है। प्रतीक्षा सदैव कष्ट दायी होती है। आँखें थक रही हैं मन आतुर है। आँसू हैं कि अनायास बहने लगे। मन की अग्नि ज्वाला बनकर आँसुओं को उष्णता प्रदान कर रही है, जिसने मन के साथ-साथ तन को भी जलाना प्रारंभ कर दिया है। उनका प्रभाव और प्रवाह बढ़ता जा रहा है। विरह की तीव्रता का प्रेम की गहराई से सीधा संबंध है। इस अवस्था में अप्रिय विचारों का आना कदाचित् उनका स्वभाव है, मगर विश्वास की अग्नि परीक्षा यहीं से शुरू होती है। बेचैनी में भी धैर्य नहीं खोना है, कदाचित् यही विरह की प्रीत है
