यह एक विचित्र संयोग ही कहा जाएगा कि जिस अंचल में रहकर बीसवीं शताब्दी के उत्तरार्द्ध में गजानन माधव मुक्तिबोध जैसे आधुनिक चिन्तक-कवि ने अपने समय के खुरदुरे और अदम्य यथार्थ के लिए फंतासी की विधि का आविष्कार किया, उसी अंचल के ठाकुर जगमोहन सिंह ने उन्नीसवीं शताब्दी के अन्त के कुछ बरसों पहले एक पूरा उपन्यास ही फंतासी के रूप में लिखा। हिन्दी में यथार्थ के चित्रण की जो इकहरी परम्परा बाद में लगभग केन्द्रीय बन गई उसमें इस उत्तराधिकार का कोई बोध या स्मृति, दुर्भाग्य से, शेष नहीं है। उपन्यास की गल्पता को हिन्दी में इतनी जल्दी साध लिया गया था और उसे अपनी जातीय परम्परा के अनुकूल भी कर लिया गया था, यह जानना आज के स्मृतिवंचित दौर में रोमांचक है। इस अनोखे गद्य में मध्यकालीन कविता ‘स्वच्छन्द’ है : उस पर सचाई का व्यर्थ का बोझ नहीं है, बल्कि सपने की सहज प्रवाहमयता है। वह खिलता, स्पन्दित, कविसमयों में विन्यस्त ऐसा गद्य है कि विशेषत: आज तो सर्वथा अनन्य लगता है। ‘श्यामास्वप्न’ का पुनर्प्रकाशन सचमुच एक साहित्यिक घटना है। शायद इसका एक और साक्ष्य कि कैसे कई मायनों में उत्तर-आधुनिक हमारे यहाँ प्राक्-आधुनिक है।

- Description: 1960 के आरम्भिक दिनों में मैंने दो मुख्य फ़िल्में (फ़ीचर फ़िल्म) बनाने में मदद की थी और अपने को एक मुख्य फ़िल्म निर्देशन के योग्य मान रहा था। मैं इधर-उधर एक कहानी तलाश रहा था। मेरे मित्र और सहयोगी अरुण कौल ने राजेन्द्र यादव की कहानी ‘सारा आकाश’ का सुझाव दिया। उसकी एक प्रति उनके पास थी, उन्होंने मुझे दे दी। एक शाम मैं उसे एक ही साँस में पढ़ गया और मैं अभिभूत ही था। ‘सारा आकाश’ एक जटिल कथा के रूप में लिखा गया था। लेखक ने सपाट रास्ता नहीं चुना था, इसीलिए इसने मुझे ज़्यादा आकर्षित किया था। दृश्यों को मैंने यथासम्भव वर्णन के निकट रखा है। चूँकि लेखक ने कहानी फ़िल्म के लिए नहीं लिखी थी, अत: उसमें बहुत-सी बातों का विवरण दिया गया है जिनको दृश्यों में रूपान्तरित करना एक चुनौती थी।...ऐसे ही कई स्थान हैं जहाँ नायक अतीत और भविष्य के बारे में बहुत कुछ सोच रहा है। छठे दशक के मध्य में मैंने अनेक यूरोपीय और रूसी फ़िल्में देखी थीं। मुझे ऐसे दृश्य लिखने में इनसे सहायता मिली। पटकथा लिखने के बाद मुझे इसे विक्रम सिंह को दिखाने का अवसर मिला। वे अपने समय में ‘टाइम्स ऑफ़ इंडिया’ के सर्वश्रेष्ठ फ़िल्म आलोचक थे। उन्होंने मेरे प्रयास की सराहना की और मुझे फ़िल्म बनाने के लिए प्रोत्साहित किया। और ‘सारा आकाश’ बन गई। 1970 में ‘फ़िल्मफ़ेयर’ के समारोह में इसे वर्ष की सर्वश्रेष्ठ पटकथा घोषित किया गया। निर्देशन के लिए इसकी सिफ़ारिश राष्ट्रीय पुरस्कार के लिए भी की गई। इसके कैमरामैन को सर्वश्रेष्ठ छायाचित्रण के लिए पुरस्कार भी मिला। —बासु चटर्जी

- Description: अपने पहले उपन्यास ‘हलफ़नामे’ से प्रसिद्धि पानेवाले कथाकार राजू शर्मा का दूसरा उपन्यास है ‘विसर्जन’। हिन्दी संसार में भूमंडलीकरण पर लगभग दो दशकों से चर्चा हो रही है किन्तु उस यथार्थ को बड़े औपन्यासिक ढाँचे में विन्यस्त और प्रकट करने का श्रेय ‘विसर्जन’ के रचनाकार राजू शर्मा के ही हिस्से में जाता है। भूमंडलीकरण ने हमारी दुनिया की शक्ल को बुनियादी तौर पर बदलकर रख दिया है। यह कहना अत्युक्ति न होगी कि उसने मनुष्य के मूल्यों, आस्थाओं, संवेदनाओं, सम्बन्धों के इलाक़े में अब तक के इतिहास की सबसे भारी उथल-पुथल पैदा की है। मनुष्यता पर पड़नेवाले उसके प्रभाव पर केन्द्रित भले ही कुछ रचनात्मक दृष्टान्त हैं, किन्तु भूमंडलीकरण की शक्ति-संरचना का उसी की ज़मीन पर विखंडन पहली बार ‘विसर्जन’ में ही सम्भव हुआ। प्रधानमंत्री, अर्थशास्त्री, प्रशासनिक मशीनरी, गुप्तचरी आदि के ज़रिए राजू शर्मा ‘विसर्जन’ में ऐसा अद्भुत आख्यान रचते हैं कि उत्तर-पूँजीवादी दुनिया के ब्रह्मास्त्र और कवच भूमंडलीकरण का सारा भेद खुल जाता है। राजू शर्मा की रचनात्मक शक्ति इस मायने में भी आश्वस्त करती है कि वे भूमंडलीकरण के क़िले में प्रविष्ट होकर उसकी व्यूह रचना को उजागर करते हैं। ‘विसर्जन’ में मनुष्यता के सम्मुख उपस्थित संकट की गहन खोज और उसका आखेट है, पर यह सब कुछ ऐसे गहरे रचनात्मक धैर्य और सूझ-भरी निस्संगता से मुमकिन किया गया है कि ‘विसर्जन’ सत्य और गल्प, यथार्थ और कला, विचार और संवेदना, प्रतिबद्धता और निष्पक्षता जैसी विपर्यय दिखनेवाली सृजनात्मक सिद्धियों को एक साथ अर्जित करनेवाला उपन्यास बन जाता है। ‘विसर्जन’ अपने अभिनव विषय की व्यापकता एवं गहराई के कारण महत्त्वपूर्ण है, वह इसलिए भी क़ीमती है कि यहाँ सच्चाई का अनुवाद नहीं, उसका ग़ज़ब का पुनर्सृजन है। एक से एक अविस्मरणीय चरित्रों, वृत्तान्तों से सम्पन्न इस कृति में अर्थगर्भिता और व्यंजनाओं का ऐसा अभूतपूर्व वैभव है जो मौजूदा साहित्यिक परिदृश्य में दुर्लभ है। ‘विसर्जन’ न केवल राजू शर्मा की कथायात्रा की अगली मंज़िल है, वरन् उसे हिन्दी उपन्यास की उपलब्धि के रूप में भी स्वीकार किया जाएगा, ऐसी उम्मीद बाँधना उचित ही होगा। —अखिलेश
