- Description: ‘लड़कियाँ’ को ममता कालिया की उन कथा-रचनाओं में रखा जा सकता है जहाँ उनकी गद्य-सामर्थ्य अपने चरम पर है। छल-छल बहते वाक्यों की चुस्ती, व्यंग्य की सूक्ष्मता, तीक्ष्ण आब्ज़र्वेशन और उसकी सटीक अभिव्यक्ति, हाथ से छुई जा सकने वाली चित्रात्मकता—शब्द की ताक़त जो आपको फ़ौरन पकड़ लेती है, और अपने साथ बहा ले जाती है। बम्बई का एक पुराना मैंशन इस कहानी की पृष्ठभूमि है। उसके एक फ़्लैट में नायिका अकेली रहती है। नौकरीपेशा है। जीवन ऑफ़िस और घर के बीच आने-जाने और विज्ञापन फ़िल्मों के लिए नए प्लॉट सोचने में गुज़र रहा है। तभी कुछ दिन के लिए उसके बॉस की एक रिश्तेदार अफ़शाँ पाकिस्तान से आती है और उसके पास ही रहने लगती है। जीवन की एकरसता भंग होती है। दीवाली पर उसका जो फ़्लैट वीरान पड़ा रहता था, अफ़शाँ के जलाए दीयों से रात-भर जगमगाता रहता है। कहानी का अन्त दोनों के बीच एक मामूली-से संदेह के उगने और फिर उसके ख़त्म होने पर होता है और इस सन्देश पर कि मुसीबत आए तो हथियार नहीं, इनसान ही काम आता है। लेकिन इसके बीच यह छोटा-सा उपन्यास बम्बई, वहाँ के जीवन, रोज़मर्रा के संघर्षों और लोगों के बारे में बहुत कुछ बता जाता है।

- Description: साहित्य में मंज़रनामा एक मुकम्मिल फ़ॉर्म है। यह एक ऐसी विधा है जिसे पाठक बिना किसी रुकावट के रचना का मूल आस्वाद लेते हुए पढ़ सकें। लेकिन मंज़रनामा का अन्दाज़े-बयान अमूमन मूल रचना से अलग हो जाता है या यूँ कहें कि वह मूल रचना का इन्टरप्रेटेशन हो जाता है। मंज़रनामा पेश करने का एक उद्देश्य तो यह है कि पाठक इस फ़ॉर्म से रू-ब-रू हो सकें और दूसरा यह कि टी.वी. और सिनेमा में दिलचस्पी रखनेवाले लोग यह देख-जान सकें कि किसी कृति को किस तरह मंज़रनामे की शक्ल दी जाती है। टी.वी. की आमद से मंज़रनामों की ज़रूरत में बहुत इज़ाफ़ा हो गया है। यह फ़िल्म ‘इजाज़त’ का मंज़रनामा है। इस फ़िल्म को अगर हम औरत और मर्द के जटिल रिश्तों की कहानी कहते हैं, तो भी बात तो साफ़ हो जाती है लेकिन सिर्फ़ इन्हीं शब्दों में उस विडम्बना को नहीं पकड़ा जा सकता, जो इस फ़िल्म की थीम है। वक़्त और इत्तेफ़ाक़, ये दो चीज़ें आदमी की सारी समझ और दानिशमंदी को पीछे छोड़ती हुई कभी उसकी नियति का कारण हो जाती हैं और कभी बहाना। पानी की तरह बहती हुई इस कहानी में जो चीज़ सबसे अहम है, वह है इंसानी अहसास की बेहद महीन अक्कासी जिसे गुलज़ार ही साध सकते थे। इस कृति के रूप में पाठक निश्चय ही एक श्रेष्ठ साहित्यिक रचना से रू–ब–रू होंगे।

- Description: ‘सह-सा’ छोटे-छोटे अकस्मातों में बनती व्यापक मानव नियति की कहानी है। रोज़मर्रा के अनाटकीय प्रसंगों की टकराहटों से बड़े सवालों के खुले में आ जाने की कहानी। न्यायमूर्ति भूलेराम मिसिर अवकाश-प्राप्ति के बाद पत्नी प्रेमिला, बेटी चिया, और अपाहिज अम्मा के साथ रह रहे हैं। पत्नी व बेटी नौकरी पर निकल जाती हैं और घर की ज़िम्मेदारियाँ खुशी खुशी उन्होंने अपने ऊपर ले ली हैं। माँ अपनी शोर करती पटरागाड़ी पर बैठ घर भर का मुआयना करती रहती हैं। भूलेराम का बेटा, श्रवण, दूसरे शहर में है। दो नौकर हैं, शम्भु और उसकी जिज्जी। सब साथ भी हैं, अलग-थलग भी। घरों के जाने पहचाने शीतयुद्ध में रत, जिसे भूलेराम खुला युद्ध नहीं बनने देते। हँसते-खेलते सब पर आदतन चिल्लाते हैं, और बिना डींग-दावे के सबका ध्यान रखते हैं। सहसा एक दिन वे बेआराम हो जाते हैं। प्यार से बनाये उनके वन-प्रांगण में एक गौरैया उनकी बाँह पर आ बैठती है। वे मुस्कुराते हैं कि बाँह को डाल समझ रही है पर तभी मन में संदेह कौंधता है कि उन्हें देख ही नहीं रही शायद। ‘मैं क्या अदृश्य? हवा? प्रेत? भूत सा फिरता अपने घर में।’ यह संदेह यादों की लंबी कड़ी से जुड़ता है। वे जर्जराने लगते हैं और अचानक बीमारी के एक झटके में दम तोड़ देते हैं। जीते जी अदृश्य होने लगे भूले मृत्योपरांत चारों ओर छा जाते हैं। प्रकट कथा के पीछे, उसके अनकहे में, एक और कथा भी चलती है जो दिखाती है कि इस वाचाल समय में हम वही देखते सुनते हैं जो ढिंढोरा है, भड़कीला है, उसके पीछे हो रहे को नहीं। बात चाहे परिजनों की हो या नेताओं की या मेहनतकश मज़दूरों की, हम चुपचाप के अच्छे और बुरे दोनों को मिस कर देते हैं। भूले द्वारा चुपचाप किया गया अच्छा और चूहों द्वारा चुपचाप किया गया संहार इसीलिए छिपा रहता है। इस कृति में भी गीतांजलि श्री की भाषा और शैली का अपना वैभव है। बदलती स्थितियों, मनःस्थितियों को उजागर करती कभी चुटीली, नुकीली, कभी प्रशांत, उदास और दार्शनिक। हमेशा बहुअर्थी। और इसमें है उस प्रकृति का अद्भुत वात्सल्य जिसे हम बेगाना बना बैठे हैं। ‘सह-सा’ एक अनूठी प्रेम गाथा है।

- Description: कमलेश्वर ने जब कहा कि ईश्वर ने आदमी के जीवन का बहुत बड़ा हिस्सा घेर रखा है तब उनका इशारा संभवत: उस विराट कारोबार की तरफ भी था जो धर्म के नाम पर फल-फूल रहा है। धर्म और अध्यात्म अगर इस देश के समृद्ध वर्ग के लिए प्रतिष्ठा मूल्य रहे हैं तो आम आदमी के लिए श्रद्धा एवं आस्था के केन्द्र! कुम्भ, सिंहस्थ और अन्य धार्मिक समागमों में लाखों की संख्या में उमडऩे वाली भीड़ इसी का प्रमाण है। इसी बीच पिछले तीन-चार दशकों में दर्जनों नए-पुराने छोटे-बड़े अवतार, महात्मा, धर्माचार्य, बाबा, योगी, प्रवचनकार उभरे और उनके करोड़ों की सम्पत्ति वाले विशाल मठ, संस्थान, प्रतिष्ठान वगैरह बड़े हुए है। उन्हें थैलीशाहों-राजनेताओं का संरक्षण प्राप्त रहा है। बहुत सारे धार्मिक संस्थानों, प्रतिष्ठानों की बाहरी दुनिया अगर कर्मकाण्डों, अंधश्रद्धा एवं तर्कातीत विश्वासों पर खड़ी है तो भीतरी दुनिया रहस्यमयी अंधेरी, बंद और गंदगी से बजबजाती सुरंगों एवं षड्यंत्र कक्षों वाले तह$खानों से बनी है। सुनील चतुर्वेदी ने इस दुनिया के बाहर-भीतर को बहुत नजदीक से देखा, समझा और अनुभव किया है। 'महामाया' उपन्यास इसी सबका एक तरह का सर्जनात्मक एवं कथात्मक दस्तावेज है। सुनील चतुर्वेदी पत्रकार रहे हैं, व्यंग्यकार भी! इसके अलावा साक्षरता, जल संरक्षण जैसे राष्ट्रीय अभियानों में उनकी सक्रिय भागीदारी रही है। इस सबसे उनकी दृष्टि में जो पैनापन व गहराई आए हैं उन्हें इस उपन्यास में देखा जा सकता है। यह बात उपन्यास को महत्त्वपूर्ण बनाती है।
