- Description: ‘रेत’ ऐसे दुर्दम्य समाज की कथा है जिसकी परम्पराओं पर हम सहजता से विश्वास नहीं कर सकते। यह उपन्यास कंजर जनजाति की आस्था, धार्मिक विश्वास, समाज, संस्कृति का आईना है। उपन्यास ‘रेत’ के केन्द्र में कमला सदन है जहाँ एक ही घर की चौहद्दी में एक साथ दो अन्तर्विरोधी परम्पराएँ आमने-सामने टकरा रही हैं। खेलावड़ी (वेश्यावृत्ति) के पेशे के साथ कमला बुआ, सुशीला, माया, रुकमणि, वंदना और पूनम एक ही घर में सन्तो और अनीता भाभी, यानी विधिवत् विवाह के बाद भाभी कही जानेवाली पतिव्रताओं के साथ रहती हैं। कमला बुआ उपन्यास में मातृसत्तात्मक वर्चस्व की प्रतीक है और ‘भाभी’ ब्याहता होते हुए भी बाहर से लाई गई दोयम दर्जे की सदस्या। मोरवाल का यह उपन्यास अद्भुत क़िस्सागोई के साथ ही हिन्दी में नारी-विमर्श का सूत्रपात करता है। प्रकाशन के बाद से ही विवादों के केन्द्र में रहे ‘रेत’ उपन्यास में कंजर जनजाति (काननचर जनजाति) के लोक विश्वासों, प्रथाओं, जीवन-शैली और परम्पराओं का सटीक और दिलचस्पप विवरण है। जरायम पेशा और कथित सभ्य समाज के मध्य गड़ी यौन-शुचिताओं का अतिक्रमण करता यह उपन्यास आज भी अपनी विलक्षण छवि बनाए हुए है।
