- Description: मूलतः एक संवेदनशील कवि के रूप में अपनी पहचान बनाने वाली प्रतिभा कटियार का यह पहला उपन्यास अपनी पठनीयता और अपने सरोकार दोनों वजहों से लगभग चकित करता है। उपन्यास एक कोचिंग सेंटर से शुरू होता है जहाँ अलग-अलग वर्गों के छात्र एक-सी महत्वाकांक्षा के साथ पहुँचते हैं। मगर वहाँ भी छात्रों की पसन्द-नापसन्द, उनकी मैत्री और उनके सम्बन्धों में एक स्पष्ट भेदभाव चला आता है। उपन्यास में ऐसे किरदार हैं जो इस भेदभाव को तोड़कर आगे बढ़ते हैं और बताते हैं कि दुनिया इन खानों से बड़ी है। जाहिर है, यह प्रेम और आपसी समझ के रसायन से बनी मनुष्यता है जो सामाजिक चाल-चलन पर भारी पड़ रही है। उपन्यास की नायिका दलित समाज से आती है और बचपन से ही देखती है कि उसकी प्रतिभा दूसरों की आँख का काँटा बनी हुई है। उसकी सफलता भी उसका अभिशाप है। जब उसे कोचिंग सेंटर में ऐसा दोस्त मिलता है जो बराबरी पर भरोसा करता है और उससे प्रेम करने लगता है तब वह कुछ बदलती दिखती है। उपन्यास अगर इसी दिशा में बढ़कर एक सुखान्त पर खत्म हो जाता तो तो शायद वह बराबरी की कामना का एक रूमानी बयान होकर रह जाता। यहाँ लेखिका साबित करती हैं कि उनके लहजे में चाहे जितनी रूमानियत हो, यथार्थ की उनकी समझ बहुत खरी है। वे घर-परिवार और समाज के सारे पूर्वग्रह और पाखंड जैसे तार-तार कर देने पर तुली हैं। वे एक पल के लिए भी इस बात को ओझल नहीं होने देतीं कि यह समाज बहुधा कुछ लोगों के प्रति बहुत अमानुषिक व्यवहार करता है और अगर यह भी न हो तो अपनी उदारता के चरम लम्हों में भी वह उनके अवसर छीनने में कोई कोताही नहीं करता, कोई हिचक नहीं दिखाता। इसमें सन्देह नहीं कि यह उपन्यास एक साँस में पढ़ा जा सकता है, लेकिन उसके बाद जिस गहरी और लम्बी साँस की ज़रूरत पड़ती है, वह कहीं हलक में अटकी रह जाती है। कई किरदारों और स्थितियों के बीच रचा गया यह उपन्यास हमारे समय की एक बड़ी विडम्बना पर उँगली रखता है और अपने छोटे कलेवर के बावजूद एक बड़ा वृत्तान्त रचता है। —प्रियदर्शन

- Description: 1960 के आरम्भिक दिनों में मैंने दो मुख्य फ़िल्में (फ़ीचर फ़िल्म) बनाने में मदद की थी और अपने को एक मुख्य फ़िल्म निर्देशन के योग्य मान रहा था। मैं इधर-उधर एक कहानी तलाश रहा था। मेरे मित्र और सहयोगी अरुण कौल ने राजेन्द्र यादव की कहानी ‘सारा आकाश’ का सुझाव दिया। उसकी एक प्रति उनके पास थी, उन्होंने मुझे दे दी। एक शाम मैं उसे एक ही साँस में पढ़ गया और मैं अभिभूत ही था। ‘सारा आकाश’ एक जटिल कथा के रूप में लिखा गया था। लेखक ने सपाट रास्ता नहीं चुना था, इसीलिए इसने मुझे ज़्यादा आकर्षित किया था। दृश्यों को मैंने यथासम्भव वर्णन के निकट रखा है। चूँकि लेखक ने कहानी फ़िल्म के लिए नहीं लिखी थी, अत: उसमें बहुत-सी बातों का विवरण दिया गया है जिनको दृश्यों में रूपान्तरित करना एक चुनौती थी।...ऐसे ही कई स्थान हैं जहाँ नायक अतीत और भविष्य के बारे में बहुत कुछ सोच रहा है। छठे दशक के मध्य में मैंने अनेक यूरोपीय और रूसी फ़िल्में देखी थीं। मुझे ऐसे दृश्य लिखने में इनसे सहायता मिली। पटकथा लिखने के बाद मुझे इसे विक्रम सिंह को दिखाने का अवसर मिला। वे अपने समय में ‘टाइम्स ऑफ़ इंडिया’ के सर्वश्रेष्ठ फ़िल्म आलोचक थे। उन्होंने मेरे प्रयास की सराहना की और मुझे फ़िल्म बनाने के लिए प्रोत्साहित किया। और ‘सारा आकाश’ बन गई। 1970 में ‘फ़िल्मफ़ेयर’ के समारोह में इसे वर्ष की सर्वश्रेष्ठ पटकथा घोषित किया गया। निर्देशन के लिए इसकी सिफ़ारिश राष्ट्रीय पुरस्कार के लिए भी की गई। इसके कैमरामैन को सर्वश्रेष्ठ छायाचित्रण के लिए पुरस्कार भी मिला। —बासु चटर्जी
