‘महाभारत’ विश्व-इतिहास का प्राचीनतम महाकाव्य है। होमर की ‘इलियड’ और ‘ओडीसी’ से कहीं ज़्यादा प्रवीणता के साथ परिकल्पित और शिप्लित यह रचनात्मक कल्पना की अद्भुत कृति है। ऋषि वेदव्यास द्वारा ईसा के प्रायः 2000 वर्ष पूर्व रचित इस महाकाव्य में लगभग समस्त मानवीय मनोभावों—प्रेम और घृणा, क्षमा और प्रतिशोध, सत्य और असत्य, ब्रह्मचर्य और सम्भोग, निष्ठा और विश्वासघात, उदारता और लिप्सा—की सूक्ष्म प्रस्तुति मिलती है।

यों तो ‘महाभारत’ भारतीय मानस में रचा-बसा ग्रन्थ है, पर इसने सम्पूर्ण विश्व के पाठकों को आकर्षित किया है। शायद इसीलिए इस महाकाव्य का रूपान्तर विश्व की सभी प्रमुख भाषाओं में हुआ है। परन्तु विस्मय होता है यह देखकर कि ज़्यादातर रूपान्तरों में इसकी क्षमता का प्रतिपादन एक काव्यात्मक सौन्दर्य और सुगन्ध से समृद्ध कथा के रूप में नहीं हो पाया है। सम्भवतः इसलिए कि लेखकों ने मूलतः इसके कहानी पक्ष को ही प्रधानता दी।...किन्तु इस पुस्तक के लेखक शिव के. कुमार ने इसी कारण इस महाकाव्य में कुछ रंग और सुगन्ध भरने का प्रयास किया है।

यह वस्तुतः ‘महाभारत’ का एक नवीन रूपान्तर है। ‘महाभारत’ एक अद्वितीय रचना है। यह काल और स्थान की सीमाओं से परे है। इसलिए हर युग में इसके साथ संवाद सम्भव है। वर्तमान युग में भी सामाजिक न्याय, राजनीतिक स्वार्थजनित राष्ट्र विभाजन, नारी सशक्तिकरण और राजनेताओं के आचरण के सन्दर्भों में इसका आर्थिक औचित्य है। अंग्रेज़ी से हिन्दी में इस कृति का अनुवाद करते हुए प्रभा के. सिंह ने हिन्दी भाषा की प्रकृति का विशेष ध्यान रखा है। समग्रतः एक अनूठी रचना।

बुद्ध के जीवन पर आधारित इस उपन्यास में बुद्ध के सभी सिद्धान्तों को कथा-सूत्र में पिरोकर प्रस्तुत किया गया है, जिन्हें बुद्ध के बुद्धत्व की थाती माना गया। सहज, जीवन से जुड़ी भाषा में लिखा गया उपन्यास बुद्ध या उनके दर्शन को लेकर कोई विमर्श खड़ा करने का प्रयास न करके उनकी जीवन की घटनाओं के साथ भौतिक संसार से शनै:-शनै: उनके मोहभंग को दिखाता हुआ उनकी निर्वाण-यात्रा के पथ को पुन: आलोकित करता है। वह भी इतनी सहज गति के साथ कि कहीं-कहीं वह आपको अपनी ही यात्रा लगने लगती है।

यह उपन्यास के सहजता के ही कारण है कि इसे पढ़ते हुए हमारे मन में अपने आसपास व्याप्त हिंसा, असहिष्णुता और पौरुष के निकृष्टतम संस्करणों का सर्व-स्वीकृत प्रचलन चकित करने लगता है। किसी भी विभूति के जीवन को आधार बनाकर लिखे गए उपन्यास की सबसे बड़ी सफलता यही मानी जानी चाहिए कि वह तर्कों के नहीं, संवेदना के स्तर पर हमें कितना उस व्यक्ति के जीवन और प्रतिश्रुतियों से जोड़ता है। इस अर्थ में यह सर्वथा सफल उपन्यास है।

Adorations of the Ancients offers a complete English translation of all 19 stories from Vaddaradhane in a single volume. These stories represent the earliest prose in 10th-century Halagannada. Initially, they seem to be highly religious, emphasising ethics and morality aligned with the Jain tradition. However, as creative works, they function on multiple levels: realistic, mythical, fantastic, quasi-historical, worldly, monarchical, economic, and socio-cultural. The characters are consistently portrayed within various economic classes and, interestingly, rarely within caste groups. Women characters are depicted as strong and decisive. This translation is based on R.L. Anantharamaiah’s edition of Shivakotyacharya’s Vaddaradhane. It aims to balance the limitations and scope of equivalents and approximations, making the reading experience enjoyable while maintaining scholarly interest.

Marathi has an unbroken literary tradition of over eight centuries, divided conveniently into two distinct periods, classical and modern. The Classical period spans six centuries, remarkable for poetry, devotional and heroic. Jnandev, Namdev, Eknath, Tukaram and Ramdas have become household names throughout India. A literary digest of South Indian Languages.

Oral epics in any Indian language are generally associated with certain specific communities, defined by their traditional occupations; and the present oral epic Koti Channaya belongs to the Billava community. This poetic narrative, which records the life and adventures of the two cultural heroes of the Billava community, their yearning for cultivable land, their brave opposition to the established powerful classes, and their tragic end, is sung by the members of the particular communities called Pambada and Parava of coastal Karnataka, during the annual worship of the twin heroes. The oral epic, Koti Chennaya unravels the world of Billava community (traditionally toddy-tappers) of coastal Karnataka recording in the process the life and adventures as also the travails and tribulations of the two cultural heroes of Billava community. Most of the oral epics begin with a 'Creation Myth', which begins with the creation of the entire universe step by step, thus focuses on the legendary first parents/ancestors of the community concerned. Such a myth, besides glorifying the cultural heroes of the epic, gives a privileged position to the community by linking it with the rest of the world and gives it a socio-cultural identity. Koti Channaya also begins with a 'Creation Myth'. A recent study undertaken by UNESCO says that half of the 6,700 languages spoken in the world at present face the danger of extinction before the end of this century.
