- Description: वैज्ञानिक प्रयोगशालाएँ आधुनिक भारत की प्रगतिशील यात्रा के पड़ाव भी हैं और उसे बल देनेवाले शक्ति–केन्द्र भी। ये प्रयोगशालाएँ देश के विद्यार्थियों को बड़े पैमाने पर शोधकार्य करने की सहूलियतें देती हैं, उन्हें अपनी प्रतिभा का उपयोग करने का अवसर प्रदान करती हैं, और इस प्रकार देश के वैज्ञानिक व आर्थिक विकास को गति देती हैं। हमारी प्रमुख विज्ञान–संस्था ‘वैज्ञानिक और औद्योगिक अनुसन्धान परिषद’ (सी.एस.आई.आर.) के तहत तीस राष्ट्रीय प्रयोगशालाएँ और बारह सरकारी औद्योगिक संस्थाएँ कार्यरत हैं। इस पुस्तक के लेखक और वैज्ञानिक विषयों के विद्वान गुणाकर मुळे 1994–95 में विज्ञान एवं प्रौद्योगिकी विभाग की सलाहकार समिति के सदस्य थे। उसी समय उन्होंने यह विचार प्रकट किया था कि इन प्रयोगशालाओं में क्या कार्य हो रहे हैं, और उनके प्रमुख शोध–क्षेत्र क्या–क्या हैं, इस विषय में जनसाधारण को बहुत ज़्यादा जानकारी नहीं है, जबकि इन प्रयोगशालाओं पर देश की जनता का ही पैसा खर्च होता है। परिषद द्वारा उनके विचार का अनुमोदन मिलने पर उन्होंने देश–भर की प्रयोगशालाओं में जाकर उनके कार्य को देखा और वहाँ हो रही शोध–प्रक्रियाओं को समझा। उनकी इन्हीं यात्राओं का नतीजा है यह पुस्तक। देश की विभिन्न प्रयोगशालाओं के इतिहास, उनके कार्यों, उपलब्धियों और सम्बन्धित विषयों की सम्पूर्ण जानकारी से लैस इस पुस्तक में गुणाकर मुळे ने अत्यन्त सरल भाषा में आधुनिक भारत के इन शक्तिपीठों का वर्णन किया है। निस्सन्देह, यह पुस्तक देश की वैज्ञानिक प्रगति में रुचि रखनेवाले जिज्ञासु पाठकों के लिए उपादेय और रुचिकर सिद्ध होगी।

- Description: अंकों की जिस थाती ने हमें आज इस लायक़ बनाया है कि हम चाँद और अन्य ग्रहों पर न सिर्फ़ पहुँच गए बल्कि कई जगह तो बसने की योजना तक बना रहे हैं, उन अंकों का आविष्कार भारत में हुआ था। वही 1,2,3,4...आदि अंक जो इस तरह हमारे जीवन का हिस्सा हो चुके हैं कि हम कभी सोच भी नहीं पाते कि इनका भी आविष्कार किया गया होगा, और ऐसा भी एक समय था जब ये नहीं थे। हिन्दी के अनन्य विज्ञान लेखक गुणाकर मुळे की यह पुस्तक हमें इन्हीं अंकों के इतिहास से परिचित कराती है। पाठकों को जानकर आश्चर्य होगा कि दुनिया में चीज़ों को गिनने की सिर्फ़ यही एक पद्धति हमेशा से नहीं थी। लगभग हर सभ्यता ने अपनी अंक-पद्धति का विकास और प्रयोग किया। लेकिन भारत की इस पद्धति के सामने आने के बाद इसी को पूरे विश्व ने अपना लिया, जिसका कारण इसका अत्यन्त वैज्ञानिक और सटीक होना था। मैक्स मूलर ने कहा था कि ‘संसार को भारत की यदि एकमात्र देन केवल दशमिक स्थानमान अंक पद्धति ही होती, और कुछ भी न होता तो भी यूरोप भारत का ऋणी रहता।’ इस पुस्तक में गुणाकर जी ने विदेशी अंक पद्धतियों के विस्तृत परिचय, यथा—मिस्र, सुमेर-बेबीलोन, अफ्रीका, यूनानी, चीनी और रोमन पद्धतियों की भी तथ्यपरक जानकारी दी है। इसके अलावा गणितशास्त्र के इतिहास का संक्षिप्त परिचय तथा संख्या सिद्धान्त पर आधारभूत और विस्तृत सामग्री भी इस पुस्तक में शामिल है। कुछ अध्यायों में अंक-फल विद्या और अंकों को लेकर समाज में प्रचलित अन्धविश्वासों का विवेचन भी लेखक ने तार्किक औचित्य के आधार पर किया है जिससे पाठकों को इस विषय में भी एक नई और तर्कसंगत दृष्टि मिलेगी।
