रामकथा से सम्बन्धित विभिन्न अंचलों के लोकगीतों में लोकमंगल की भावना व्यक्त हुई है। आचार्य रामचन्द्र शुक्ल ने तुलसी के संदर्भ में जिस लोक मंगल की सर्वतोभद्र प्रतिष्ठा की है वह लोकमंगल तुलसी के काव्य में लोक जीवन के प्रभाव से ही प्रतिष्ठित हुआ है। लोक मूल्यों के प्रति तुलसी की निष्ठा उनके लोकाभिराम में केन्द्रित हो जाती है। लोक रामायण लोक के सामाजिक, आध्यत्मिक, सांस्कृतिक एवं कलात्मक मूल्यों की संप्रतिष्ठा करती है। इन मूल्यों की प्रतिष्ठा हेतु लोक ने अपने ढंग से रामायण की चरित्र संरचना की है। कथा के अनेक अभिप्रायों का संवितरण लोक के अनेक अंचलों में एक जैसा है। बहुत संभव है कि इस तरह के संवितरण में चरणशील प्रवृत्ति के अनेक जनों की भूमिका रही हो। भक्ति के हिलुरते अछोर भाव समुद्र की लहरें कब कहाँ किस तट पर अपने आस्था जल का विमोचन करती रही हैं, यह लोकगीतों की अभिव्यक्ति में अनुभव किया जा सकता है। यह सर्वत्र एक से ही भाव का जो लोक चित्र में उदय होता है वह लोक की अंतर्निहित समिष्ठि शक्ति का प्रकाशन भी है। लोक रामायण लोक की समिष्ठिगत अवधारणा का संपुजित प्रकाश इसी अर्थ में प्रदान करती है।
लोक कथाओं के रूप में रामकथा अनेक अंचलों में अपने एकदम अलग सन्दर्भों में व्यक्त हुई है। विशेष रूप से आदिवासी कहे जानेवाले सुदूर अंचलों से लेकर विभिन्न पहाड़ी क्षेत्रों में रामकथा लोक बोली के गद्य में प्राप्त होती है। काव्य में तो प्राय: सभी लोकांचलों में रामकथा गायी गयी है। इसके अलावा प्राकृत और अपभं्रश में भी रामकथा पर केन्द्रित अनेक राम कथायें रची गयी हैं।

Adi Shankaracharya shed his mortal body here. Guru Nanak meditated here and Swaminarayana, the founder of the sect that bears his name, saw the vision of god here. The Ramayana and the Mahabharata mention Kailas. This is where Ravana had worshipped Lord Shiva. He wanted to take Kailas with him. Shiva guilefully dissuaded him from doing so. Arjuna performed penance here and received the Pashupata Astra from Shiva. Yudhishthir proceeded heavenwards via this route. One by one, all the family members fell by the roadside; only the faithful dog kept company. Bhasmasur, the Rakshas, a devotee of Shiva was reduced to cinders here. Today the dark shadow of civilisation has begun to fall even on Mansarovar. This lake is shrinking. The sacred water body, that once stretched across 410 square kilometres, is now shrunk to only 10 square kilometres. Consider this the rage of Nature. Had Kalidasa been alive, he would have been deeply saddened to see his beloved Himalaya in this state. Is it the same Himalaya that is described in Raghuvamsham and Kumar Sambhavam? Civilisation has reached a point where the divine dimensions of Himalaya are disturbed.

यह किताब ई.वी. रामासामी नायकर 'पेरियार' (17 सितम्बर, 1879—24 दिसम्बर, 1973) के दार्शनिक व्यक्तित्व से परिचित कराती है। धर्म, ईश्वर और मानव समाज का भविष्य उनके दार्शनिक चिन्तन का केन्द्रीय पहलू रहा है। उन्होंने मानव समाज के सन्दर्भ में धर्म और ईश्वर की भूमिका पर गहन चिन्तन-मनन किया है। इस चिन्तन-मनन के निष्कर्षों को इस किताब के विविध लेखों में प्रस्तुत किया गया है। ये लेख पेरियार के दार्शनिक व्यक्तित्व के विविध आयामों को पाठकों के सामने रखते हैं। इनको पढ़ते हुए कोई भी सहज ही समझ सकता है कि पेरियार जैसे दार्शनिक-चिन्तक को महज़ नास्तिक कहना उनके गहन और बहुआयामी चिन्तन को नकारना है।
यह किताब दो खंडों में विभाजित है। पहले हिस्से में समाहित वी. गीता और ब्रजरंजन मणि के लेख पेरियार के चिन्तन के विविध आयामों को पाठकों के सामने प्रस्तुत करते हैं। इसी खंड में पेरियार के ईश्वर और धर्म-सम्बन्धी मूल लेख भी समाहित हैं जो पेरियार की ईश्वर और धर्म-सम्बन्धी अवधारणा को स्पष्ट करते हैं।
दूसरे खंड में पेरियार की विश्वदृष्टि से सम्बन्धित लेखों को संगृहीत किया गया है जिसमें उन्होंने दर्शन, वर्चस्ववादी साहित्य और भविष्य की दुनिया कैसी होगी जैसे सवालों पर विचार किया है। इन लेखों में पेरियार विस्तार से बताते हैं कि दर्शन क्या है और समाज में उसकी भूमिका क्या है? इस खंड में वह ऐतिहासिक लेख भी शामिल है जिसमें पेरियार ने विस्तार से विचार भी किया है कि भविष्य की दुनिया कैसी होगी?

- Description: सप्तसिंधु क्षेत्र की कुछ घटनाएँ ऐसी हैं, जिन्होंने भारतवर्ष के इतिहास में महत्त्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई है। इनमें सबसे पहली घटना तो सिंधु-सरस्वती सभ्यता का विकास है। दरअसल वर्तमान भारतीय विश्वासों, आस्थाओं एवं पूजा-पद्धति का आधार सिंधु-सरस्वती घाटी में ही मिलता है। इसके उपरांत वेद रचना का युग आता है। यह सिंधु-सरस्वती सभ्यता का अगला चरण है—गंभीर चिंतन का युग। इस युग के चिंतन ने भारतवर्ष को ही नहीं, बल्कि पूरे जंबूद्वीप को आच्छादित किया। कुरुक्षेत्र में हुआ महाभारत का युद्ध इस क्षेत्र की ऐसी घटना है, जिसने पूरे हिंदुस्तान को सप्तसिंधु के मैदान में लाकर खड़ा कर दिया था। बाद के काल में विदेशी आक्रांता येन-केन-प्रकारेण विजित प्रदेश के निवासियों को अपने मजहब में मतांतरित करने लगे थे। हमले क्योंकि सप्तसिंधु क्षेत्र से ही होते थे, इसलिए इसका सर्वाधिक दंश भी इसी क्षेत्र को सहना पड़ा। लेकिन इस नई आफत का सामना कैसे किया जाए, यह सबसे बड़ी चुनौती थी। इस मरहले पर दशगुरु परंपरा की शुरुआत एक दैवी योजना ही मानी जा सकती है। गुरु नानक देवजी इसके संस्थापक थे। दुर्भाग्य से दशगुरु परंपरा का मूल्यांकन आध्यात्मिक क्षेत्र में तो हुआ है, लेकिन ऐतिहासिक व सामाजिक क्षेत्र में समग्र रूप से नहीं हुआ। यह ऐसा क्षेत्र है, जिसमें कुदाल चलाने की जरूरत है और यह पुस्तक दशगुरु परंपरा को प्रकाश में लाने का स्तुत्य प्रयास है।
