He was made a Knight Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire (KCIE) and was promoted to a Knight Grand Commander (GCIE) and a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire, Civil Division (KBE).

- Description: इतिहास पर लिखना बहुत मुश्किल होता है, और विशेषकर उस इतिहास पर लिखना, जिसके बारे में कहीं कोई विशेष जानकारी नहीं मिलती हो। आकाश माथुर ने एक ऐसा ही विषय उठा लिया। कुँवर चैन सिंह की जगह उन्हीं के साथ शहीद हुई नर्तकी उमेदा की कहानी लिखना। नर्तकी का नाम तक कहीं नहीं मिलता, बस एक टूटी-फूटी समाधि है, जो सीहोर में कुँवर चैन सिंह की छतरी के पास बनी हुई है। समाधि भी धीरे-धीरे टूट रही है, या यूँ कहें कि तोड़ी जा रही है। और कुछ समय में वहाँ समाधि का नामो-निशान तक नहीं मिलेगा। लेकिन अब कम से कम यह तो है कि आकाश ने उसकी कहानी को सुरक्षित कर दिया है। प्रशंसा करनी होगी आकाश की कि उसने एक ऐसी शहीद नर्तकी की कहानी लिखी, जिसके बारे में कहीं एक शब्द भी नहीं लिखा गया है। इस उपन्यास को पढ़ते हुए यह विश्वास करना मुश्किल होता है कि कुछ बहुत छोटे-छोटे सूत्रों से ही इस पूरे उपन्यास को लिख दिया गया है और उमेदा की कहानी रच दी गई है। आकाश ने बहुत मेहनत की है इस उपन्यास पर। इन दिनों जब शोध कर के लिखने की परंपरा ही समाप्त होती जा रही है, ऐसे में यह उपन्यास इसलिए भी महत्त्वपूर्ण है क्योंकि इसके लेखक ने न केवल किताबों की यात्रा की है, बल्कि उन स्थानों की भी यात्रा की, जहाँ-जहाँ इस उपन्यास को लेकर उसे सूत्र मिल सकते थे। जाने किस-किस से मुलाक़ात की, उन सब से, जिनके पास से कोई छोटी से छोटी भी जानकारी मिल सकती थी। यह मेहनत, यह श्रम और यह शोध इस उपन्यास को पढ़ते समय शब्द दर शब्द महसूस होता है। उपन्यास बहुत रोचक बना है, जिसको पढ़ते समय कभी भी पठनीयता की कमी महसूस नहीं होती है। आकाश का यह पहला उपन्यास है, उम्मीद करता हूँ कि आगे और भी उपन्यास आकाश की लेखनी से सामने आएँगे। मेरी शुभकामनाएँ। - पंकज सुबीर

- Description: ‘क्रान्तिवीर भगत सिंह : ‘अभ्युदय’ और ‘भविष्य’’ आज़ादी की लड़ाई, ख़ासकर इन्क़लाबी नौजवानों के संघर्ष की हक़ीक़त तलाशती कोशिश का नतीजा है। पुस्तक में शामिल पत्रिकाओं ‘अभ्युदय’ और ‘भविष्य’ की सामग्री हिन्दुस्तान की आज़ादी के संग्राम को ठीक से समझने के लिए बेहद ज़रूरी है। ‘अभ्युदय’ ने भगत सिंह के मुक़दमे और फाँसी के हालात पर भरपूर सामग्री छापी और 8 मई, 1931 को प्रकाशित उसका ‘भगत सिंह विशेषांक’ ब्रिटिश सरकार द्वारा ज़ब्त कर लिया गया। भगत सिंह के जीवन, व्यक्तित्व और परिवार को लेकर जो सामग्री ‘अभ्युदय’ व ‘भविष्य’ में छापी गई—विशेषतः भगत सिंह व उनके परिवार के चित्र—उसी से पूरे देश में भगत सिंह की विशेष छवि निर्मित हुई। ‘भविष्य’ साप्ताहिक इलाहाबाद से रामरख सिंह सहगल के सम्पादन में निकलता था। पहले पं. सुन्दरलाल के सम्पादन में ‘भविष्य’ निकलता था, जिसमें रामरख सिंह सहगल काम करते थे। 2 अक्टूबर, 1930 को गांधी जयन्ती पर रामरख सिंह सहगल ने, जो स्वयं युक्तप्रान्त कांग्रेस कार्यसमिति के सदस्य थे, ‘भविष्य’ साप्ताहिक का प्रकाशन शुरू किया। पहले अंक से ही भगत सिंह आदि पर सामग्री प्रकाशित कर, ‘भविष्य’ ने सनसनी फैला दी। ‘भविष्य’ में भगत सिंह की फाँसी के बाद के हालात का जीवन्त चित्रण हुआ है। ‘भविष्य’ और ‘अभ्युदय’ से कुछ चुनिन्दा चित्र इस किताब में शामिल किए गए हैं। सम्पादक प्रो. चमन लाल ने विलुप्तप्राय तथ्यों को इस पुस्तक में सँजोकर ऐतिहासिक कार्य किया है। वस्तुतः इस इन्क़लाबी वृत्तान्त को पढ़ना स्वतंत्रता की अदम्य जिजीविषा से साक्षात्कार करना है।

- Description: ब्रिटिश उपनिवेश द्वारा भारत से बाहर ले जाए गए मज़दूरों को तत्कालीन कम्पनियाँ और उनके एजेंट दो नामों से पुकारते थे। दक्षिण भारत, बिहार और प. उत्तर प्रदेश के ग़ैर-आदिवासी मज़दूरों को 'कुली' और झारखंड के सदान और आदिवासियों को 'हिल कुली', 'धांगर' और 'कोल' कहा जाता था। ये और कोई नहीं ग्रेटर झारखंड की उरांव, मुंडा, संताल, खड़िया और सदान जातियाँ थीं। ब्रिटिश संसद और ब्रिटिश उपनिवेशों में मौजूद दस्तावेज़ों में झारखंड के आदिवासियों के आप्रवासन के ठोस प्रमाण उपलब्ध हैं। कालान्तर में मॉरीशस, गयाना, फ़िजी, सूरीनाम, टुबैगो सहित अन्य कैरीबियन तथा लैटिन अमेरिकी और अफ़्रीकी देशों में लगभग डेढ़ सदी पहले ले जाए गए ग़ैर-आदिवासी गिरमिटिया मज़दूरों ने बेशक लम्बे संघर्ष के बाद इन देशों को भोजपुरी बना दिया है और वहाँ के नीति-नियन्ताओं में शामिल हो गए हैं। लेकिन सवाल है कि वे हज़ारों झारखंडी जो सबसे पहले वहाँ पहुँचे थे, कहाँ चले गए? कैसे और कब वे गिरमिटिया कुलियों की नवनिर्मित भोजपुरी दुनिया से ग़ायब हो गए? ऐसा क्यों हुआ कि गिरमिटिया कुली ख़ुद तो आज़ादी पा गए लेकिन उनकी आज़ादी हिल कुलियों को चुपचाप गड़प कर गई। एक कुली की आज़ादी कैसे दूसरे कुली के ख़ात्मे का सबब बनी? क्या थोड़े आर्थिक संसाधन जुटते ही उनमें बहुसंख्यक धार्मिक और नस्ली वर्चस्व का विषधर दोबारा जाग गया और वहाँ उस अनजान धरती पर फिर से ब्राह्मण, क्षत्रिय, भूमिहार और वैश्य पैदा हो गए? सो भी इतनी समझदारी के साथ कि 'शूद्र' को नई सामाजिक संरचना में जन्मने ही नहीं दिया? इस उपन्यास का मूल प्रश्न यही है। कोन्ता और कुन्ती की इस कहानी को कहने के पीछे लेखक का उद्देश्य पूरब और पश्चिम दोनों के ग़ैर-आदिवासी समाजों में मौजूद नस्ली और ब्राह्मणवादी चरित्र को उजागर करना है जिसे विकसित सभ्यताओं की बौद्धिक दार्शनिकता के ज़रिए अनदेखा किया जाता रहा है।
