Chhattisgrah has many archaeological sites of great historical importance. The archaeological history of this region starts from the early Gupta period. The vast sites of Malhar in Bilaspur district, Dipadiha in Surguja, Sirpur (Shreepur) in Raipur and Barsur in Dantewada (Old Bastar district) are very rich. The punch mark coins have been found from Tarapur, Udela and Arng. Coins of Mouriyan period, Satvahan, Kushan, Gupta kings and local dynasties-Sharabhpuria, Nal, Pandu, and Kalchury have also been found at several places. Besides this the metal work was practiced and beautiful bronzes were found from Sirpur site. These bronzes were casted in the sixth or seventh century A.D. Iron working was also prevalent in this region. Agaria tribe was mining iron ore and smelting it and making iron tools and agricultural equipments.
