- Description: विभाजन भारतीय उपमहाद्वीप का ऐसा दारुण जख़्म है जो न जाने कितने दिलों के भीतर मुसलसल टीस रहा है। जया जादवानी का उपन्यास ‘इस शहर में इक शहर था’ विभाजित सिन्ध और उसके लोगों की कसक और पीड़ा का आख्यान है। यह एक जगह से उजड़ और बिखर कर दूसरी जगहों पर जड़ें जमाने की संघर्ष भरी दास्तान भी है जहाँ ऊपरी तौर पर भले ही सब कुछ सहज लगता हो पर उनकी रूह का एक हिस्सा कहीं बहुत पीछे के शहर में फंसा रह गया है। अपनी रूह के इसी गुम हिस्से की तलाश में उपन्यास का वाचक ‘नन्द’ कराची पहुँचता है जहाँ से उसे शिकारपुर जाना है, जहाँ जाने की उसे अनुमति नहीं है। जहाँ उसे अपने ही जैसे बिखरे हुए लोगों से मिलना है, जिन्हें उसकी तलाश में इस तरह से मददगार होना है जैसे वे अपनी ही मदद कर रहे हों। शिकारपुर—जहाँ उसका बचपन बीता है, जहाँ से निकलकर वह बम्बई में रहते हुए दुनिया भर में भटक रहा है। यह स्मृति में धँसी हुई एक ऐसी विलक्षण यात्रा है जहाँ एक बूढ़ा आईने के सामने अपने आपसे सिन्धी में बतिया रहा है; कोई बरसों बाद मिली एक बूढ़ी औरत के साथ रोटी खाते हुए उसकी गोद में रो रहा है, वह श्मशान जहाँ नन्द के लोग जलाए गए, वह गलियाँ जहाँ वे चले, उनमें ठहरते और चलते हुए नन्द अपने पुरखों के तलवों का दुख-दर्द जी रहा है। जहाँ से अपने बचपन के प्यार की एक झलक भर देखकर बिना कुछ कहे वह वापस चला आता है कि बार-बार आने की एक वजह यह भी बनी रहे।
