- Description: यह आवश्यक नहीं कि स्त्री-पुरुष का सम्बन्ध नर-मादा का ही हो; एक स्तर ऊपर उठकर वह दो व्यक्तियों, दो मनुष्यों, दो सखाओं का भी हो सकता है। सार्वजनिक स्पेस में एक स्वस्थ सन्तुलन भी तभी साधा जा सकता है जब सम्बन्धों में एक अहैतुक सजगता मौजूद रहे, और स्त्री की सहज सकारात्मकता इसमें निर्णायक भूमिका निभा सकती है। ‘दूर देश के परिन्दे’ उपन्यास बीसवीं सदी में, स्वतंत्रता-प्राप्ति के आसपास के वर्षों में दीप्तिमान ऐसे विश्व-प्रसिद्ध लोगों के जीवन में आईं स्त्रियों की कथा कहता है जो अपने समय की स्त्रियों के विशेष प्रिय रहे; कुछ था उनमें जिसके चलते स्त्री-मन उन्हें उम्मीद से देखता था कि उनकी अगुवाई में जो समाज बनेगा उसमें धैर्य, ममता, सहिष्णुता और त्याग जैसे गुण स्त्री और पुरुष दोनों में बराबर बँटेगे; दोनों साहचर्य का एक अधिक सृजनात्मक मॉडल विकसित करेंगे। टैगोर, निराला, गांधी, रोमां रोलां आदि इनमें से कुछ थे। कई स्त्रियाँ इनके जीवन में आयीं, विवाद भी उठे। इनका ज्यादा त्रास तो स्त्रियों ने ही अनुभव किया जिसके विवरण इस उपन्यास के दृश्यबन्धों और संवादों में अनुस्यूत हैं। उपन्यास का पहला खंड निराला पर केन्द्रित है जहाँ नायिका उनकी अपनी ही बेटी सरोज है; दूसरे खंड की नायिका है ज्याँ क्रिस्तोफ की माँ डोरोथी जिनके विषय में कल्पना की गई है कि वे रोमां रोलां की केयरटेकर टाइपिस्ट थीं, तीसरे खंड की नायिकाएँ गांधी के ब्रह्मचर्य-विषयक प्रयोगों की साक्षी और सहचर रहीं मीरा बेन और कस्तूरबा हैं। चौथे खंड के केन्द्र में है भारत में ग्रामोफ़ोन की प्रथम गायिका गौहर जान और पाँचवाँ खंड समर्पित है टैगोर की प्रेरणा कही जाने वाली रानू को। यहाँ वे सब अपनी कथा कहती हैं और दोस्त-समाज की इस संकल्पना को बल देती हैं कि जिस आत्म-परिवर्तन की उम्मीद स्त्रियाँ पुरुषों से करती रही हैं, संसार के सुदीर्घ, स्थायी और ऊर्ध्वमुखी बदलाव के लिए भी वह एक आधारभूत शर्त है।
