- Description: यथार्थवादी कथाकार अमरकान्त के इस चर्चित उपन्यास के केन्द्र में आज़ादी के बाद का भारतीय मुस्लिम समाज, उसकी संस्कृति, उसकी सोच और उसके सामाजिक-पारिवारिक मरहले हैं। मुस्लिम महिलाओं के हालात पर लेखक ने इस उपन्यास में ख़ासतौर पर अपना ध्यान केन्द्रित किया है। भारत और पाकिस्तान का बँटवारा इस कथा में बार-बार विचार के केन्द्र में आता है और वह माहौल भी जो बँटवारे के वक़्त विशेष तौर पर उन इलाक़ों में मौजूद था जहाँ हिन्दू-मुस्लिम बरसों से साथ रहते आए थे। उपन्यास का एक पात्र मुनीर अहमद इन हालात के मद्देनज़र कहता है कि आज़ादी के पहले मज़हब और जात-पाँत के अलगाव तो थे, मगर सभी अपनी-अपनी हद में रहते हुए आज़ादी की लड़ाई में शामिल थे, लेकिन आज़ादी के बाद यह चीज़ गायब हो गई। साम्प्रदायिक दंगों के दौरान आम लोगों की स्थितियाँ भी इस उपन्यास में दिखाई देती हैं। इस उपन्यास के बारे में मशहूर है कि अमरकान्त जी ने इसकी पांडुलिपि को तब तक छपने नहीं दिया था जब तक इस्लामी समाज और धार्मिक पहलुओं के जानकार लोगों को इसे पढ़वा नहीं लिया। भारतीय मुस्लिम समाज के सांस्कृतिक, सामाजिक व आर्थिक मसलों पर केन्द्रित एक महत्त्वपूर्ण उपन्यास।
