शिकायत मुझे भी है' में हरिशंकर परसाई के लगभग दो दर्जन निबन्ध संगृहीत हैं और इनमें से हर निबन्ध आज की वास्तविकता के किसी न किसी पक्ष पर चुटीला व्यंग्य करता है। परसाई के लेखन की यह विशेषता है कि वे केवल विनोद या परिहास के लिए नहीं लिखते। उनका सारा लेखन सोद्देश्य है और सभी रचनाओं के पीछे एक साफ-सुलझी हुई वैज्ञानिक जीवन-दृष्टि है, जो समाज में फैले हुए भ्रष्टाचार, ढोंग, अवसरवादिता, अन्धविश्वास साम्प्रदायिकता आदि कुप्रवृत्तियों पर तेज रोशनी डालने के लिए हर समय सतर्क रहती है। कहने का ढंग चाहे जितना हल्का-फुल्का हो, किन्तु हर निबन्ध आज की जटिल परिस्थितियों को समझने के लिए एक अन्तर्दृष्टि प्रदान करता है। इसलिए जो आज की सच्चाई को जानने में रुचि रखते हैं, उनके लिए यह पुस्तक संग्रहणीय है।

हरिशंकर परसाई हिन्दी के अकेले ऐसे व्यंग्यकार रहे हैं जिन्होंने आनन्द को व्यंग्य का साध्य न बनने देने की सर्वाधिक सचेत कोशिश की। उनकी एक-एक पंक्ति एक सोद्देश्य टिप्पणी के रूप में अपना स्थान बनाती है। स्थितियों के भीतर छिपी विसंगतियों के प्रकटीकरण के लिए वे कई बार अतिरंजना का आश्रय लेते हैं, लेकिन, तब भी यथार्थ के ठोस सन्दर्भों की धमक हमें लगातार सुनाई पड़ती रहती है। लगातार हमें यह एहसास होता रहता है कि जो विद्रूप हमारे सामने प्रस्तुत किया जा रहा है, उस पर सिर्फ ‘दिल खोलकर’ हँसने की नहीं, थोड़ा गम्भीर होकर सोचने की हमसे अपेक्षा की जा रही है। यही परसाई के पाठ की विशिष्टता है। ‘निठल्ले की डायरी’ में भी उनके ऐसे ही व्यंग्य शामिल हैं। आडंबर, हिप्पोक्रेसी, दोमुँहापन और ढोंग यहाँ भी उनकी क़लम के निशाने पर हैं।

परसाई के पास एक ऐसी नैतिक दृष्टि है जो गहरे पर्यवेक्षण, अनुभव, अध्ययन और वैचारिकता से बनी है। यह उन्हें साहसी तथा आत्मविश्वासी बनाती है, जो काइयाँ से काँइयाँपन में होड़ लेनेवाली भी है। हम उनके लेखन में बार-बार पाएँगे कि वे कुतर्कियों को यूँ ही बख्श नहीं देते, उनसे प्रतिस्पर्धा करते हैं और खदेड़ते हुए दूर तक उनके पीछे जाते हैं। परसाई श्रेष्ठ व्यंग्यकार इसलिए हैं कि वे केवल व्यंग्यकार ही नहीं हैं। हर स्थिति में व्यंग्य को नहीं बरतते; जब अनिवार्य होता है, तभी उसका उपयोग करते हैं। इसका सम्बन्ध परसाई के संवेदनशील-विचारधारायुक्त प्रगतिशील व्यक्तित्व से है जो उनके व्यंग्य नए रूपों में नैतिक और कलात्मक बनाता है। जब वे स्वार्थियों, शोषकों, भ्रष्टाचारियों, अहंकारियों, पाखंडियों, नैतिकता का मुखौटा लगाए व्यक्तियों का चित्रण करते हैं तो उनका रूप अलग होता है और सामान्य, शोषित, अभावग्रस्त, प्रतिकूल परिस्थितियों में पिस रहे लोगों का चित्रण करते समय वे एकदम बदल जाते हैं। कुल मिलाकर परसाई की ये रचनाएँ उनके रचना-संसार का दूसरा पक्ष प्रस्तुत करती हैं। इन रचनाओं में मामूली, सामान्य घरों के युवक-युवतियाँ और साहित्य-राजनीति के क्षेत्र के कुछ व्यक्तित्व मानवीयता और आचरण संहिता का आदर्श प्रस्तुत करते हैं। यह अमानवीयता के नीचे दबी मानवीय सम्भावनाओं का सर्जनात्मक-आग्रहपूर्वक प्रकटीकरण है जो पहले पक्ष का पूरक है और परसाई की रचनाओं के सौन्दर्य-बोध के ढाँचे को समझने में सहायक है।

The novel Dika, which means "direction" in Konkani, tells the story of a farming family from the lower middle class. It is set in the North Kanara district of Karnataka and offers a vivid portrayal of the socio-cultural life of the region's inhabitants. The plot follows Deepak and his family as they struggle to adapt to a new way of life in their village after the sudden death of Deepak's father, a policeman. Along the way, they encounter various challenges, including problematic villagers, conniving relatives, and blind faith. When Deepak's sister falls in love with a Muslim boy, he must confront societal norms and convince his mother to accept their relationship. Ultimately, Deepak leads his family to a new and free existence, breaking free from the constraints imposed on them by society. This is best exemplified in the novel's closing scene, where Deepak witnesses a lone crow moving eastward, away from its flock, in a new direction.
