भारतीय सैन्य पायलट विंग कमांडर राकेश शर्मा अंतरिक्ष में जानेवाले पहले भारतीय हैं। 13 जनवरी, 1949 को पटियाला में जनमे राकेश शर्मा सन 1970 में फाइटर पायलट के रूप में भारतीय वायु सेना में शामिल हुए। सन 1971 के भारत-पाक युद्ध में उन्होंने कम-से-कम 21 बार उड़ान भरी। वे अंतरिक्ष में यात्रा करनेवाले पहले भारतीय और विश्व के 138वें अंतरिक्ष यात्री बने।
यह अंतरिक्ष मिशन लगभग 8 दिनों तक चला और 11 अप्रैल, 1984 को राकेश शर्मा एवं उनका दो सदस्यीय सोवियत दल पृथ्वी पर कजाकिस्तान लौट आया। ‘हीरो ऑफ द सोवियत यूनियन’ का सम्मान पानेवाले वे पहले भारतीय भी हैं। उन्हें अपने रूसी सह-अंतरिक्ष यात्रियों के साथ ‘अशोक चक्र’ सम्मान भी मिला।
सेना से पद-मुक्ति के बाद सन 1987 में राकेश शर्मा हिंदुस्तान एयरोनॉटिक्स लिमिटेड में मुख्य परीक्षण पायलट के रूप में सम्मिलित हुए, जिसे उन्होंने 2001 में स्वचालित वर्क फ्लो बोर्ड का अध्यक्ष बनने के बाद छोड़ दिया।
