मंच पर उतरने से पहले अभिनेता किस भीतरी संघर्ष से गुजरता है; दिये गए चरित्र के साथ अपनी खुद की पहचान को एकलय करने में उसे नाटक के पाठ के साथ-साथ खुद को भी कितना पढ़ना-खँगालना पड़ता है; कितनी मदद उसे अपने अब तक के जिये जीवन से मिलती है, और कितनी अभिनेता के रूप में प्राप्त प्रशिक्षण से; और कैसे एक पात्र को जीना समाज में उसकी अपनी गति को प्रभावित करता है, इन सवालों पर आम दर्शक कभी नहीं सोचता।
ये चीजें आम तौर पर सामने भी नहीं आ पातीं क्योंकि अभिनेता न कभी इस बारे में कहीं लिखते हैं, न कोई उनसे पूछता है। यह उस मंच का किंचित् अदृश्य कोना है जिस पर हमने जीवन की नाटकीयताओं के जरिये अपने अस्तित्व के कई अँधेरे-अदेखे पहलुओं को देखा-जाना है।
यह किताब इस दिशा में एक बड़ी, और गम्भीर पहलकदमी है।
हिन्दी में पहली बार मंच पर सक्रिय युवा अभिनेता और अभिनेत्रियाँ यहाँ अपने ऐसे अनुभवों को साझा कर रहे हैं जो खुद उनके लिए भी गहरी अन्तर्यात्राओं की तरह रहे। इन्हें पढ़कर मालूम होता है कि जिसे हम ‘एक्टिंग’ कहकर आगे बढ़ जाते हैं, वह ‘एक्टर’ के लिए उसके अस्तित्व-बोध के स्तर पर घटित होनेवाला कितना बड़ा संघर्ष होता है; व्यक्तित्वान्तरण की वह प्रक्रिया उन्हें कितना मुक्त करती है, और कितना कसती है।
और यह हम पढ़ते हैं एक सजीव, धड़कते हुए, अत्यन्त ईमानदार गद्य के रूप में जिसे वही सम्भव कर पाता है जो अनुभव के कंटकाकीर्ण पथ पर नंगे पैर और खुली आँखों चला हो, जो प्रक्रिया का भोक्ता भी रहा हो और साक्षी भी।
अभिनय-जीवन के इन संस्मरणों को पढ़कर हम रंग-दर्शक के रूप में समृद्ध होते हैं। अभिनय के विद्यार्थियों के लिए तो इनसे गुजरना किसी ‘वर्कशॉप’ में होने जैसा है।

कबीर निर्गुण सन्त काव्यधारा के ऐसे शब्द-साधक हैं जिन्होंने अपने युग की धार्मिक, सामाजिक एवं राजनीतिक व्यवस्था से टकराकर अद्भुत शक्ति प्राप्त की। पारम्परिक सांस्कृतिक प्रवाह में सम्मिलित प्रदूषित तत्त्वों को छानकर उसे मध्यकाल के लिए ही आस्वादनीय नहीं, बल्कि आधुनिक जनमानस के लिए भी उपयोगी बना दिया। भारतीय धर्म साधना में ऐसा निडर तथा अकुंठित व्यक्तित्व विरला है।
पंडितों, मौलवियों, योगियों आदि से लोहा लेकर कबीर ने जनसाधारण के स्वानुभूतिजन्य विचारों और भावों की मूल्यवत्ता स्थापित की। कबीर की वाणी सन्त-कंठ से निसृत होकर साधकों, अनुयायियों एवं लोक-जीवन में स्थान एवं रुचि भेद के अनुसार विविध रूपों में परिणत हो गई। इसलिए कबीर की वाणी के प्रामाणिक पाठ निर्धारण की जटिल समस्या कड़ी हो गई।
कबीर पन्थ में बीजक की श्रेष्ठता मान्य है, विद्वानों ने ग्रन्थावलियों को महत्त्व दिया है। सामान्य जन के लिए लोक में व्याप्त कबीर वाणी ग्राह्य है। अतः तीनों परम्पराओं में से किसी को भी त्यागना उचित नहीं है। फलत: कबीर की रचनाओं का समग्र रूप तीनों के समाहार से ही सम्भव है। प्रस्तुत ग्रन्थावली का सम्पादन इसी दृष्टि से किया गया है। मूल पाठ के साथ कबीर की मूल साधना तथा मन्तव्य के अनुकूल भाष्य प्रस्तुत किया गया है। इसमें अपनी इच्छित दिशा में आवश्यकता से अधिक खींचकर पाठकीय सोच को कुंठित करने की चेष्टा नहीं की गई है। कबीर-वाणी के प्रामाणिक एवं समग्र पाठ की दृष्टि से तथा उसमें निहित विचारों, भावों एवं अनुभूतियों को उद्घाटित करने की दृष्टि से यह कृति निश्चित ही महत्त्वपूर्ण एवं संग्रहणीय है।
