भारत का राष्ट्रीय वृक्ष बरगद है। यह ओड़िसा का राज्य वृक्ष भी है। लगभग ऐसी ही स्थिति पीपल और हुलुंग की है। पीपल को बिहार और हरियाणा दोनों ने अपना राज्य वृक्ष घोषित किया है। हुलुंग विश्व-भर में होलांग के नाम से प्रसिद्ध है। हुलुंग को अरुणाचल प्रदेश और असम दोनों ने अपना राज्य वृक्ष माना है।
प्रत्येक वृक्ष के परिचय में वृक्ष का हिन्दी नाम, अंग्रेज़ी नाम और वैज्ञानिक नाम दिया गया है।
पुस्तक का उद्देश्य वृक्षों से सम्बन्धित भ्रामक धारणाओं का खंडन करते हुए वैज्ञानिक जानकारियाँ प्रदान करना और इनके महत्त्व एवं उपयोग से परिचित कराना है।
समाजशास्त्री और पर्यावरणविद् डॉ. परशुराम शुक्ल ने उक्त उद्देश्य को ध्यान में रखते हुए इस पुस्तक में वृक्षों के बारे में विस्तार से जानकारियाँ दी हैं। ये रोचक और ज्ञानवर्द्धक हैं। हिन्दी में अपने विषय पर यह अकेली पुस्तक है।
