अब तक सिद्धों-नाथों और संतों के बीच दार्शनिक सम्बन्ध ही अधिक खोजा गया है। परन्तु इस पुस्तक में मैंने दार्शनिक पक्ष के साथ-साथ उनके सामाजिक पक्ष को भी अंत:सम्बद्धता में देखा है। सिद्धों-नाथों और संतों के बीच अनेक समान्तर अंत सूत्र होने के बावजूद उनके दर्शन और विचार, उनकी भाषा और उनके सामाजिक सरोकार में अंतर देखने को मिलता है। यह भेद और उनके बीच की समानता को इस पुस्तक में कथ्य, संवेदना,रूप आदि के अलग-अलग स्तरों पर देखा गया। इस पुस्तक को प्रकाशित कराने का मेरा विचार 'प्रति संस्कृति' के निर्माण में सिद्धों, नाथों एवं संतों के योगदान को देखकर हुआ। अपने समय में प्रचलित मान्यताओं से इन्होंने अलग राह ली। परन्तु उसमें से कुछ समय से आगे और कुछ समय के दबाव और बहाव में ही गति करती रहीं। तीनों सम्प्रदाय के कवियों ने समाज में व्याप्त अनेक बाह्य आडम्बरों पर प्रहार किया, उनसे प्रति प्रश्न किया। परन्तु स्त्री के प्रति प्रचलित नजरिये को सिर्फ सिद्ध कवि ही तोड़ पाए। आडम्बरों पर तीनों सम्प्रदाय के कवि मुखर हैं परन्तु नाथों एवं संतों ने स्त्री को 'पितृसत्तात्मक' समाज में घुटने के लिए छोड़ ही नहीं दिया बल्कि अपनी राह भी अलग कर लीं।

- Description: "भारतीय स्वतंत्रता संग्राम के प्रमुख क्रांतिकारी शिवराम हरि राजगुरु का जन्म सन् 1908 में पुणे जिले के खेड़ा गाँव में हुआ था। उनके बाल्यकाल में ही पिता का निधन हो जाने के कारण बहुत छोटी उम्र में ही वे विद्याध्ययन करने एवं संस्कृत सीखने वाराणसी आ गए थे। वहीं उन्होंने हिंदू धर्म-ग्रंथों तथा वेदों का अध्ययन तो किया ही, ‘लघुसिद्धांत कौमुदी’ जैसा क्लिष्ट ग्रंथ बहुत कम समय में कंठस्थ कर लिया था। राजगुरु को कसरत (व्यायाम) का बेहद शौक था और छत्रपति शिवाजी की छापामार युद्ध-शैली के वे बड़े प्रशंसक थे। वाराणसी में राजगुरु का संपर्क अनेक क्रांतिकारियों से हुआ। वे चंद्रशेखर आजाद से इतने अधिक प्रभावित हुए कि उनके संगठन हिंदुस्तान सोशलिस्ट रिपब्लिकन आर्मी से तत्काल जुड़ गए। आजाद के संगठन के अंदर उन्हें ‘रघुनाथ’ के छद्म नाम से जाना जाता था। राजगुरु एक अच्छे निशानेबाज भी थे। सांडर्स का वध करने में उन्होंने भगतसिंह तथा सुखदेव का पूरा साथ दिया, जबकि चंद्रशेखर आजाद ने छाया की भाँति उन तीनों को सामरिक सुरक्षा प्रदान की। 23 मार्च, 1939 को भारत माँ के वीर सपूत राजगुरु भगतसिंह व सुखदेव के साथ लाहौर की सेंट्रल जेल में फाँसी पर झूलकर मातृभूमि पर बलिदान हो गए।

In response to the rather partisan policies of Mughal emperors, a number of personalities came forward in different parts of Hindustan, to lead people in resisting the tyranny. When Aurangzeb got cowed down in Rajputana against the unified resistance of Marwar and Mewar, it provided much needed succour to the great Shivaji and Guru Govind Singh to regroup and consolidate forces in their respective areas. The credit for tying down the Mughals for the longest period in history goes to the Marathas; this also acted as a lifeline to the Sikhs, Rajputs, Bundelas and Jats. Rajputs and Sikhs repaid their debt to Marathas by keeping the Mughals, post Aurangzeb, completely embroiled in Punjab and Rajputana, and indirectly paving the way for an almost unchallenged rise of the Marathas. The prolonged resistance witnessed the supreme sacrifices of numerous unsung heroes of medieval history. Through unmatched grit and determination, they succeeded in bringing down the mighty Empire to its knees, eventually leading to its demise.

Their peculiar belief system, worship of myriad spirits, animals, plants, hills, rivers and mountains compound the mystery.
