Over 33 million strong Indian diasporas spread all over the world has been an exceptionally successful story. Given their skills and other social qualities, they are also among the most sought after lots in most countries. Indian diaspora has performed well on all important parameters — political, economical, technological and cultural. PIOs are amongst the top skilled, employable and prosperous non-native people in most countries. They are heading some of the top multinational companies and hold high positions in many international organisations, in a way making an important contribution to the evolving global agenda. Today, Indian diaspora is investing in creating jobs and cutting edge technologies world over. India has also done very well in reaching out to its diaspora through various channels, including the youth. At over USD 75 billion annually, India is the top recipient of remittances. Diaspora could also be an important source of technology and know-how. Given their goodwill on both sides, they are a great source of confidence-building between India and countries of their adoption and have demonstrated their clout on many occasions. Over the last many centuries, Indians have travelled to many near and far off destinations in the world for trade, business, education and jobs. One major wave of such movement was carried out by the colonial administration under the so called indentured system for meeting labour shortages in their overseas plantations. This inhuman system of exploitation of workers finally ended and the centenary of its abolition was commemorated in many parts of the world including India during 2017-18. Antar Rashtrya Sahyog Parishad (ARSP) had organised year-long activities to mark this important landmark in the life of the Indian diaspora, culminating with an international conference on the topic, ‘Contribution of Diaspora in Nation Building’ in Mauritius in July 2018. Several leaders and scholars addressed this gathering, and this publication captures the essence of its outcomes. Nine years have passed since the ethnic conflict ended in Sri Lanka. The hope that Sri Lankan refugees would return to the island has been belied. This book highlights the dilemma faced by Sri Lankan Tamil refugees amid the twists and turns in Indo-Sri Lankan relations. The global refugee phenomenon and the Indian experience, the movement of Sri Lankan refugees to different parts of the world, the rise and fall of the Tamil Tigers and the competitive nature of Sinhala politics, which stands in the way of ethnic reconciliation, are analysed in detail. The peculiar problems faced by refugees of Indian origin are highlighted. The Author pleads for the enactment of a National Refugee Law that should balance the humanitarian concerns of refugees with the security interests of the Indian State.

The Dharmic traditions – Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism – share much in common, not with standing a number of variations among them. In all these traditions, the scriptures, writings, and practices hold compassion as an integral part and a supreme virtue. This collection of essays by leading scholars from different disciplines aptly captures the religious and spiritual dimensions of these traditions as they relate to compassion. Most of the authors are practitioner-scholars and experts in their respective disciplines, including the sciences, humanities, social sciences, law, and religion. The experts met in September 2014 at Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado, for two days of lively deliberations under the auspices of the Uberoi Foundation for Religious Studies, which was established to spread awareness and promote understanding of the Dharmic traditions throughout North America. After addressing the ‘central and fundamental’ knowledge of these traditions and the common features and interactions among them, the essays here discuss compassion from various perspectives, such as relationship with the natural world and the environment, selfless service, and the treatment of animals. As a comparative study, this unique collection presents a clear picture of the central theme of moral and compassionate conduct in the Dharmic traditions.

Maoism in India is an attempt to study and analyse the movement. Already, a number of left intellectuals and scholars have studied the movement and written about it. My attempt has been to find out the difference between the Naxalite and CPI (Maoist) movements. Is there any difference as such? Though the Naxalite movement was born in Naxalbari in 1967, it is still striving to build a sustainable support base. The Naxalite movement got its name from Naxalbari village, where the first major uprising took place. Also, through the merger of the People’s War and the Maoist Communist Centre (MCC), the Communist Party of India (Maoist) was formed in 2004, which aims to overthrow the government of India through people’s war. Why an organization which was perceived as the forum of the “deprived and alienated sections of the population” described as “the single biggest internal security challenge”. Usually, people confuse Maoists and Naxalites and cannot clearly distinguish between the two terms. The media simply adds to the confusion. The Communist Party of India (Maoist) aims to overthrow the government of India through people’s war. I also tried to find out the reasons that led the Maoists, in recent times, to focus more on arms intervention than on organising a mass resistance movement.
