- Description: सभ्यता के वर्तमान पड़ाव पर जितनी उपेक्षा किसान और किसानी की हो रही है उतनी शायद ही किसी और की हुई हो। देश में तीन लाख से ज्यादा किसान आत्महत्या कर चुके हैं और अस्सी लाख से ज्यादा किसानी से किनारा कर चुके हैं। इसी भीषण यथार्थ की पृष्ठभूमि पर रचा गया है यह उपन्यास ‘फाँस’। कभी प्रेमचन्द ने ‘गोदान’ के जरिये भारतीय ग्रामीण तंत्र के शोषणकारी ढाँचे और किसानों के जीवन-संघर्ष को उजागर किया था, उसके वर्षों बाद, ‘फाँस’ हिन्दी का किंचित पहला उपन्यास है जो किसानों की दारुण स्थिति को उसकी व्यापकता में सामने लाता है। इस उपन्यास में विदर्भ (महाराष्ट्र) के किसानों की कहानी गई है जिनके एक कन्धे पर घर-परिवार का उत्तरदायित्व है तो दूसरे कन्धे पर किसानी का। दोनों उत्तरदायित्व एक-दूसरे से नाभिनालबद्ध—फसल होगी तो घर-परिवार चलेगा, नहीं होगी तो पेट भरना मुश्किल, बच्चों की पढ़ाई-लिखाई दुश्वार, हारी-बीमारी का इलाज असम्भव। फिर किसानी भी तो सिर्फ मेहनत नहीं माँगती; उसमें भी पैसा चाहिए। पैसा जुटता है कर्ज से। इस तरह फर्ज से कर्ज तक एक ऐसा व्यूह बनता है जिसमें पड़ने के बाद किसान निरुपाय और अन्तत: आत्महंता हो जाता है। इस दुखान्त को यह उपन्यास पूरी सूक्ष्मता से दर्ज करता है और यह सोचने को विवश करता है कि क्या यह त्रासदी केवल किसानों की है अथवा एक समूची सभ्यता, एक समूचे समाज की? अत्यन्त समसामयिक और ज्वलन्त विषय पर एक अवश्य पठनीय कृति!
