मगध में संगृहीत कविताएँ इतिहास नहीं हैं, इतिहास का सम्मोहन हैं, मायालोक हैं; जिनमें नगर एवं गणराज्य, ‘मगध’, ‘अवन्ती’, ‘कोसल’, ‘काशी’, ‘श्रावस्ती’, ‘चम्पा’, ‘मिथिला’, ‘कोसाम्बी’ धूल में आकार लेते और धूल में निराकार हो जाते हैं बवंडर की तरह। इन कविताओं के नायक और नायिकाएँ हैं, इतिहास के निर्माता और गवाह, चन्द्रगुप्त, अशोक, बिंबिसार, अजातशत्रु, कालिदास, शकटार, वसंतसेना, वासवदत्ता, अम्बपाली...जिनका नाम लेते ही न जाने कितनी कहानियाँ जाग उठती हैं, कितने संस्मरण कौंध जाते हैं। जरा, मरण, रोग, शोक, पतन, उत्थान, युद्ध, हत्या, जय, पराजय! मनुष्य की समग्र गाथा में महाकाव्यत्व होता है। ये कविताएँ उसी समग्रता और उसी महाकाव्यत्व को प्रस्तुत करने का एक उपक्रम हैं। ये पाठक को स्तब्ध करती हैं, चौंकाती हैं, भयभीत करती हैं, शोक-सन्देश की तरह उन पर छा जाती हैं, अनहोनी की तरह मँडराती हैं और होनी की तरह आकर बैठ जाती हैं। ये बिना चेतावनी दिए पाठक को अपनी गिरफ़्त में ले लेती हैं। इनका असर जादुई है। जैन और बौद्ध दर्शन का स्मरण दिलाती हुई मगध में संगृहीत कविताएँ काल की एक झाँकी हैं और महाकाल की स्तुति! ये अतीत का स्मरण हैं, वर्तमान से मुठभेड़ और भविष्य की झलक! मगध श्रीकान्त वर्मा की कविताओं में एक नया मोड़ है।

यह कहकर कि विष्णु खरे हिन्दी में बिलकुल अलग ढंग की कविता लिखते थे (उनकी ख़ास अपने रंग की कविता की बात है यह, उन कुछेक कविताओं की नहीं जो उनकी उतनी ख़ास नहीं हैं), हम ज़रूर एक बड़ी बात कहते हैं। पर उनका अपना रंग क्या है, यह बताए बग़ैर बात अधूरी है। पहली ही नज़र में उन्हें अलग दिखा देनेवाली चीज़ है उनकी कविता का बाना; ऐसा बाना जिसमें से 'कवितापन’ के निशान मानो चुन-चुनकर हटा दिए गए हैं—भावनात्मकता, लयात्मकता, आवेग और बहाव, लगाव और आत्मीयता, सहानुभूति और करुणा तक...। पहली नज़र में वे कविता होने का दावा करनेवाली गद्यात्मक कहानियाँ मालूम होती हैं। उनका कहानीपन भी वर्णनात्मक लगता है, कथात्मक नहीं, मानो जान-बूझकर लयहीन, गद्यात्मक, मनमाने तौर पर लम्बी या छोटी पंक्तियों में कुछ चीज़ों के बारीक वर्णन में घटना या पात्र जोड़ दिए गए हैं; आप कविता से जुड़ी अपनी अपेक्षाएँ, रुचियाँ, आदतें लेकर उनके पास जाते हैं और निराश होते हैं; आप कहानी की तरह उसे पढ़ना चाहते हैं तो पाते हैं कि जिन तत्त्वों (सूक्ष्म निरीक्षण, मानसिक या घटनागत मोड़, आश्चर्य इत्यादि) को आप कहानी पढ़ने के बाद खोजते या निकालते, वे ढाँचे की तरह—मांस-मज्जा-मोटापे से रहित—आपके सामने हैं, पूरी कहानी नहीं। कविता के रूप में आप जिस ताप, आवेग और शब्दों की मितव्ययिता चाहते हैं, वह नहीं है। कविता के रूप में उक्त तत्त्वों को जिन आवरण-आच्छादनों के साथ चाहते हैं, वे आवरण-आच्छादन भी नहीं हैं। कहानी की दृष्टि से शब्दों की कंजूसी, कविता की दृष्टि से शब्दों की इफ़रात। ‘अकेला आदमी’, ‘कोशिश’ और ‘दोस्त’ जैसी कविताएँ आपको तब भी अपनी संस्कारगत काव्य-रुचियों के क़रीबतर जान पड़ती हैं। इससे बरबस आप विष्णु खरे की दूसरी कविताओं को समझने की, उनमें ‘कवितापन’ खोजने की कोशिश करते हैं। कभी-कभी यह कोशिश लगातार चलती है; होते-होते आप कवि के मुरीद भी हो जा सकते हैं। समय इन कविताओं में एक तरह से सर्वव्याप्त आयाम है जिसमें देश या स्थान भी समाहित है। 'टेबिल’ में वह चार पीढ़ियों का क़िस्सा बनता है। ‘हँसी’ में वह हमारा अपना ज़माना है, जब पुरस्कृत बालक भूखा, पैदल, थका, शील्डों के बोझ से दबा घर पहुँचता है, जहाँ ख़ुद ही उसे ताला खोलना है; समारोह में विशेष स्वागत अतिथियों का है, सड़क पर पुलिस की घुड़क है, दूसरे दिन स्कूल में क़तार में वह निरीह इकाई मात्र है। एक संवेदनहीन, मूल्यहीन, क्रूर समाज का समय। 'गर्मियों की शाम’ में वह हमारी यौन-नैतिकता, अच्छाई, किशोर-मन की कसमसाहट का समय है। ‘स्वीकार’ और ‘डरो’ में, ‘दूरबीन’ और ‘वापस’ में और ‘कार्यकर्ता’ और ‘कोमल’ में हमारे समय का समाज-संगठन, व्यक्ति-सत्ता, व्यंग्य, तल्ख, विडम्बना, अक्सर दुरदुराए जाते आम इनसान संकेतित हैं। समय पर यही आँख ‘मुक़ाबला’ में प्रागैतिहासि फ़ैंटेसी को समेट लाती है। बचपन, कैशोर्य, जवानी, बुढ़ापा; सफलता, रोग, दैन्य, छोटे शहरों की उदासी और उदास आकर्षण, बड़े शहरों का दृश्य (‘वापस’) उनमें तरह-तरह से आता है। समय के लिए विष्णु खरे काल या महाकाल जैसे प्रत्यय नहीं अपनाते, और इस नुक्ते में उनकी काव्य-चेतना के दो रुझान स्पष्ट हैं। ‘समय’ शब्द हमारे समय में अंग्रेज़ी के ‘टाइम’ का प्रत्ययान्तर है, और प्रचलित आधुनिकतावाद में वह प्रगति, इतिहास, उत्तरोत्तर आगे बढ़नेवाला, रैखिक विकास का अर्थ लिए हुए है; व्यतीत हो जानेवाला समय है, ‘कालो न यात:’ वाला, आवर्तित, चक्राकार काल नहीं। लेकिन विष्णु खरे इसको ‘अर्थ’ और ‘अव्यक्त’ जैसी कविताओं में ‘एक प्रवहमान अनन्त लीला’ से जोड़ते हैं। आधुनिकता के विश्लेषणात्मक, वैज्ञानिक, विषयी-निरपेक्ष विषय-केन्द्रित दृष्टि के उपकरणों का उपयोग क्या वे अपनी मूल भारतीय दार्शनिक अवधारणाओं की पड़ताल करने में कर रहे हैं? सर्वातीत, लीला, स्थावर-जंगम जैसे शब्द उनके यहाँ बार-बार हैं, और केवल शब्द ही नहीं, उनके अर्थ को स्वीकार करनेवाली चेतना भी। यह चेतना—शक होता है कि—सचेत रूप से अपनाई हुई नहीं है, बल्कि उनमें ख़ुद-ब-ख़ुद है, इस देश-प्रदेश में पलने, बढ़ने के कारण। उसकी पुष्टि तरह-तरह के अध्ययनों से, हालाँकि भारतीय अवधारणा से कुछ भिन्न रूपोंवाले स्रोतों से होती है—दॉन हुआन, बोर्खेस के हवाले द्रष्टव्य हैं। तर्क से चलकर अतर्क्य तक पहुँचना इसीलिए सम्भव है। क्षणवाद को इस तरह वे विजित करते दीखते हैं। अस्तित्ववादी अकेलेपन और संत्रास की धारणाओं का आतंक इसीलिए उन पर नहीं दीखता। अन्तत: निष्कृति का द्वार उन्हें सहज ही पता है।

‘देह की भाषा’ सुरेश कुमार वशिष्ठ का महत्त्वपूर्ण कविता-संग्रह है। गाँव और माटी से जुड़े सुरेश सामाजिक अन्तःकरण रखनेवाले कवि हैं और इसी दायरे में रिश्तों की तलाश करते हैं। वे अपनी परिस्थिति और अपनी काव्यवस्तु से प्रगीतात्मक रिश्ता बनाकर जीवन के अनुभव की अखंडता और भाव-जगत की सच्चाई को शब्दों में समेट लेते हैं। वे प्रेम के चित्र उकेरते हुए जीवन से एक अपूर्व सांगीतिक लय बनाए रखने में सफल साबित होते हैं। ‘देह की भाषा’ में कवि का विनम्र मानववाद जीवन के राग-रंग और रति के अलावा समय से जुड़े संकट, व्यक्ति की पीड़ा, उसके रुदन-चिन्ता और आघात से रागात्मक लगाव रखने में सफल साबित होता है। रवीन्द्रनाथ टैगोर कहते हैं, ‘संसार की वास्तविकता मनुष्य की भावनात्मक और कल्पनात्मक पृष्ठभूमि में ही तो प्रकट होती है!’ प्रथमद्रष्ट्या सुरेश बेहद बेपरवाह नज़र आते हैं मगर कभी देह की परिधि में बँधकर प्रेम की सत्ता को स्वीकार करते हुए ख़ुद को उससे दूर नहीं जाने की ज़िद करते दीखते हैं और कभी दूर रहकर भी सहज नहीं रह पाते बल्कि उसके मंगल में अपना मंगल ढूँढ़ते हैं। उसके राग में ही जीवन के रंग ढूँढ़ते हैं...जिन रंगों में रिश्तों की ख़ुशबू है। सुरेश की कविताओं में भाषाई सहजता है, जिनमें उनके स्वभाव का भोलापन है, जिसके बूते उन्होंने प्रेम के हर पक्ष को समझा है...पूर्णता के साथ, पूर्वग्रह से परे। प्रेम को वे इतना सघन मानते हैं कि पूछो मत...जैसे फ़र्श पर पसरे पानी से लकीरें खींची जाएँ....रेट पर कुछ लिखा जाए, थोड़े क्षणों के लिए ही सही। फिर जैसे सब कुछ धुल जाए, बिसर जाए और रह जाएँ मात्र स्मृतियाँ...हज़ारों स्मृतियाँ अतीत के दामन में। शान्त-स्थिर मगर निरन्तरता के साथ।
