विजय बहादुर सिंह आधुनिक हिंदी के विकास में अपनी सृजनात्मक आलोचना से उल्लेखनीय योगदान देने वाले लेखकों में विजय बहादुर सिंह का नाम अग्रगण्य है। नियमित लेखन के साथ विजय बहादुर सिंह दीर्घ अवधि से शोध और अध्यापन कार्य से भी जुड़े रहे हैं। लेकिन मुख्यतः एक साहित्यालोचक के रूप में विख्यात विजय बहादुर सिंह ने आधुनिक हिंदी कविता और कवियों की सृजनात्मक उपलब्धियों के साथ-साथ हिंदी कथा और उपन्यास साहित्य पर भी अपनी आलोचना प्रस्तुत की है। ‘आलोचक का स्वदेश’ उनके द्वारा रचित चर्चित साहित्यिक जीवनी है। रचनाएँ डॉ. सिंह ने आठ खंडों में ‘भवानी प्रसाद मिश्र रचनावली’, चार खंडों में ‘दुष्यंत कुमार रचनावली’ और आठ खंडों में ‘नंददुलारे वाजपेयी रचनावली’ का निर्दोष और चर्चित संपादन किया। उन्होंने ‘आलोचक का स्वदेश’ नाम से नंददुलारे वाजपेयी की साहित्यिक जीवनी भी लिखी। ‘वृहत्त्रयी’, ‘नागार्जुन का रचना संसार’, ‘कविता और संवेदना’, ‘उपन्यास : समय और संवेदना’, ‘महादेवी के काव्य का नेपथ्य’ आदि उनकी प्रमुख आलोचनात्मक कृतियाँ हैं। उनकी प्रमुख काव्य कृतियाँ हैं- ‘मौसम की चिट्ठी’, ‘पृथ्वी का प्रेमगीत’, ‘पतझर की बाँसुरी’, ‘भीमबैठका’। पुरस्कार व सम्मान विजय बहादुर सिंह को उनके कृतित्व तथा सृजनात्मक अवदान के लिए ‘रामविलास शर्मा सम्मान’, ‘लोक सम्मान’, ‘श्रेष्ठ कला आचार्य और कौमी एकता सम्मान’, केंद्रीय हिंदी संस्थान के ‘सुब्रह्मण्यम भारती पुरस्कार’ तथा मप्र हिन्दी साहित्य सम्मेलन के ‘भवभूति अलंकरण’ से सम्मानित किया जा चुका है।
