जाति और अस्पृश्यता के दलदल में फँसे भारतीय समाज को उबारने का उपक्रम करनेवालों में डॉ. आंबेडकर अग्रणी हैं। उनका चिंतन मनुष्य की मुक्ति से जुड़ा है। वह समतावादी समाज का सपना देख रहे थे। आकाशवाणी पर दिए गए अपने एक भाषण में उन्होंने कहा था, “शंकराचार्य के दर्शन के कारण हिन्दू समाज-व्यवस्था में जाति-संस्था और विषमता के बीज बोए गए। मैं इसे नकारता हूँ। मेरा सामाजिक दर्शन केवल तीन शब्दों में रखा जा सकता है। ये शब्द हैं—स्वतंत्रता, समता और बन्धुभाव। मैंने इन शब्दों को फ्रेंच राज्य क्रान्ति से उधार नहीं लिया है। मेरे दर्शन की जड़ें धर्म में हैं, राजनीति में नहीं। मेरे गुरु बुद्ध के व्यक्तित्व और कृतित्व से मुझे ये तीन मूल्य मिले हैं।”

India was divded because of the obduracy of Jinnah, and in August 1947 India was partitioned and a separate country Pakistan came into existence. The demand for creation of a separate Islamic country for Muslims by dividing India was being raised since 1940.
