गंगाराम ने कनकपुर जाकर राजा से पूछने का निश्चय किया। यदि यह सच में वही पत्थर है, तो वह उसे लौटा देगा। गंगाराम किसी को दुःखी नहीं देख सकता था। यदि राजकुमारी को उसके दुःख से मुक्ति दिलाना उसके हाथ में था, तो वह ऐसा अवश्य करेगा।
रामदास झलसी के वन में लकड़ी काटने गया था। शेर-चीतों से बचने के लिए वह जान-बूझकर दिन के समय गया था। जब उसने किले के पास बारह फीट लंबे दो पैरों के एक जीव को देखा, तो वहाँ से भाग आया। उस जीव का शरीर रोओं से भरा था, हाथ-पैरों में नुकीले नाखून थे, मुँह के कोनों में तीखे दाँत थे, जैसे जानवरों के होते हैं, सुर्ख लाल आँखें थीं और उलझे हुए बाल थे।
