- Description: नवजागरण अपने राष्ट्रीय जागरण व सुधारवादी आन्दोलन के दौरान अनेक सार्थक प्रयासों और अपनी सफलताओं के लिए जाना जाता है। यह वही दौर था जब साम्राज्य विरोधी चेतना एक विराट राष्ट्रीय आन्दोलन का रूप ले चुकी थी, और राष्ट्रवाद अपने पूरे उफान पर था। मगर बावजूद इसके यह दौर अनेक विडम्बनाओं और विरोधाभासों के साथ-साथ कई विवादों का जन्मदाता भी रहा है। सबसे बड़ी विडम्बना इसकी यह रही कि दलित-प्रश्न और स्त्री-लेखन इसके परिदृश्य से पूरी तरह ग़ायब रहे। विशेषकर स्त्री-मुक्ति की छटपटाहट और चिन्ता इसके चिन्तन के केन्द्र में जैसे रहे ही नहीं। स्त्री-शिक्षा के अभाव और पितृसत्तात्मक व्यवस्था की गहरी पैठ के चलते, यह छटपटाहट हिन्दी साहित्य के इस दौर के इतिहास में अपनी उपस्थिति दर्ज कराने से वंचित रह गई। बाद में इस काल के साहित्यिक परिदृश्य और विशेषताओं को हिन्दी के अनेक महानायकों ने रेखांकित और विश्लेषित किया, लेकिन उनकी नज़रों से भी यह छटपटाहट अलक्षित और ओझल ही रही। इन महानायकों के सामने पुरुषों द्वारा रचित वही लेखन रहा, जिसके कारण हिन्दी नवजागरण को अतिशयोक्ति में कभी-कभी ‘हिन्दू नवजागरण’ भी कहा जाता है। ऐसे में यह प्रश्न उठना स्वाभाविक है कि हिन्दी नवजागरण के शुरुआत से लेकर आधुनिक काल (द्विवेदी युग) का पूरा कालखंड स्त्री-लेखन (स्त्रियों द्वारा किया गया लेखन) रहित रहा है? आख़िर ऐसे कौन से कारण थे जिनके चलते स्त्री-लेखन के रूप में, जो भी लेखन प्रकाश में आया, वह पुरुषों द्वारा ही किया गया लेखन था? ये ऐसे प्रश्न हैं जो हिन्दी साहित्य में बड़ी बहस की माँग करते हैं। बड़ी इसलिए कि यह मात्र एक धारणा या भ्रामक प्रचार है कि हिन्दी नवजागरण और उसके बाद के कुछ दशकों के दौरान स्त्री-लेखन नहीं हुआ। ‘अबलाओं का इन्साफ़’ (1927) को इसके उदाहरण के रूप में देखा जा सकता है। यह आत्मकथा गम्भीर स्त्री-प्रश्नों के साथ-साथ उस पुरुषवादी मानसिकता और सोच को पूरी निर्ममता के साथ बेपर्दा और उनके ऊपर जमी गर्द को पोंछती है, जिसे या तो जानबूझकर पोंछा नहीं गया या किसी कारणवश छोड़ दिया गया।

- Description: अरुण प्रकाश ने स्पष्ट किया है कि हिंदी में किस तरह 'विधा' का इस्तेमाल 'फॉर्म' और 'जेनर' दोनों अर्थों के लिए होता है। उनके अनुसार उपन्यास एक रूपबंध है जिसकी कई विधाएँ हो सकती हैं। मुख्य बात है, विधाओं या रूपबंधों की सैद्धांतिक कहानी उद्ïघाटित करना, जो 'गद्य की पहचान' में बड़े विस्तार और रोचक ढंग से है। पश्चिम के साहित्यिक सिद्धांतकारों ने फॉर्म और जेनर पर बड़े-बड़े काम किए हैं। मेरे देखने में हिंदी में इधर इस ढंग का यह पहला काम है, जिसमें कुछ बुनियादी सवाल उठाए गए हैं। इस संग्रह के निबंधों में अरस्तू से लेकर बाख्तिन, रोलां बार्थ, तोदोरोव, देरिदा आदि तक के विचारों पर चर्चा है। यह जानने की चीज है कि आखिरकार कोई रूपबंध क्यों अस्तित्व में आता है, किसी युग में कुछ खास रूपबंध या विधाएँ प्रधान क्यों हो उठती हैं, जीवनी जैसा प्राचीन रूपबंध अब भी क्यों जीवित है, जबकि महाकाव्य जैसा शक्तिशाली रूपबंध मर गया, क्या इस रूपबंध की कुछ सीमाएँ और नियम हैं, मिश्रण या संकरता क्यों घटित होती है, क्या नए रूपबंध या विधाएँ पुरातन के ही कायांतर हैं, चिर-परिचित रूपबंध पाठकीय मनोविज्ञान पर कैसा प्रभाव डालते हैं, साहित्यकार किसी रूपबंध से कितना रेजिमेंटेड होता है और कितना उसे तोड़कर नई जमीन देता है—अरुण प्रकाश ने ऐसे ढेरों प्रश्नों की रोशनी में गद्य की पहचान की है। शंभुनाथ (भूमिका से)

Malkani (1921-2003) achieved rare distinction and recognition in the world of journalism. It established itself as a fearless and uninhibited voice of the nation, relentlessly exposing the decay seeping into India’s body-politic by the early 1970s. In that respect ʻThe Motherland’sʼ advocacy of ʻIndia Firstʼ and its unalloyed articulation of India’s national interest remain unsurpassed. It was also its strident and uncompromising criticism of the Indira Congress and the Prime Minister’s ways, which eventually led Indira Gandhi to shut it down at the first given opportunity after she imposed the Emergency. ʻThe Motherlandʼ was, “The only paper in India to announce on 26th June the imposition of the Emergency, arrest of leaders and the wave of national shock.” This collection of K.R.Malkani’s columns in ʻThe Motherlandʼ offers an insight into Indian politics and society in the years just before Emergency was imposed by Indira Gandhi.
