' जरा ' कभी किसीको नहीं छोड़ती ! अमरत्व के अभिशाप ने जिसे घेरा हो, उसे भी महाकाल जरा समेट ही लेता है न! जरा, तू तो निमित्त मात्र है, वत्स!'' - इसी उपन्यास से कोई भी भारतीय भाषा ऐसी नहीं है जिसमें श्रीकृष्ण को केंद्र में रखकर काव्य, कहानी, उपन्यास. नाटक, संदर्भ-ग्रंथ आदि साहित्य का सर्जन न किया गया हो । ' श्याम, फिर एक बार तुम मिल जाते ' (मूल गुजराती में लिखा) उपन्यास इन सबसे अनूठा इसलिए है कि यह सिर्फ उपन्यास नहीं है-यह तो उपनिषद् है! यथार्थ कहा जाए तो यह उपनिषदीय उपन्यास है । तत्कालीन आर्यावर्त्त में श्रीकृष्ण एक विराट् व्यक्तित्व था । जब यह व्यक्तित्व अनंत में विलीन हो गया तो जो सन्नाटा छा गया, उस सन्नाटे के चीत्कार का यह आलेखन है जब श्रीकृष्ण सम्मुख थे तब बात और थी जब वे विलीन हो गए तब वसुदेव-देवकी से लेकर अर्जुन, द्रौपदी, अश्वत्थामा, अक्रूर उद्धव और राधा पर्यंत पात्रों की संभ्रमिद मनोदशा को एक अनूठी ऊँचाई के ऊपर ले जाता है यह उपन्यास । "
