- Description: Oral epics in any Indian language are generally associated with certain specific communities, defined by their traditional occupations; and the present oral epic Koti Channaya belongs to the Billava community. This poetic narrative, which records the life and adventures of the two cultural heroes of the Billava community, their yearning for cultivable land, their brave opposition to the established powerful classes, and their tragic end, is sung by the members of the particular communities called Pambada and Parava of coastal Karnataka, during the annual worship of the twin heroes. The oral epic, Koti Chennaya unravels the world of Billava community (traditionally toddy-tappers) of coastal Karnataka recording in the process the life and adventures as also the travails and tribulations of the two cultural heroes of Billava community. Most of the oral epics begin with a 'Creation Myth', which begins with the creation of the entire universe step by step, thus focuses on the legendary first parents/ancestors of the community concerned. Such a myth, besides glorifying the cultural heroes of the epic, gives a privileged position to the community by linking it with the rest of the world and gives it a socio-cultural identity. Koti Channaya also begins with a 'Creation Myth'. A recent study undertaken by UNESCO says that half of the 6,700 languages spoken in the world at present face the danger of extinction before the end of this century.

निराला “आरम्भ से ही विद्रोही कवि के रूप में हिन्दी में दिखाई पड़े। गतानुगतिकता के प्रति तीव्र विद्रोह उनकी कविताओं में आदि से अन्त तक बना रहा। व्यक्तित्व की जैसी निर्बाध अभिव्यक्ति इनकी रचनाओं में हुई है, वैसी अन्य छायावादी कवियों में नहीं हुई।...सर्वत्र व्यक्तित्व की अत्यन्त पुरुष अभिव्यक्ति ही निराला की कविताओं का प्रधान आकर्षण है। फिर भी विरोधाभास यह है कि निराला में अपने व्यक्तित्व को सबसे अलग करके अभिव्यक्त करने की चेतना सबसे कम है।...यह ध्यान देने की बात है कि निराला जी के आरम्भिक प्रयोग छन्द के बन्धन से मुक्ति पाने का प्रयास है। छन्द के बन्धनों के प्रति विद्रोह करके उन्होंने उस मध्ययुगीन मनोवृत्ति पर ही पहला आघात किया था जो छन्द और कविता को प्राय: समानार्थक समझने लगी थी।...परन्तु निराला जी ने जब छन्दों के प्रति विद्रोह किया तो उनका उद्देश्य छन्द की अनुपयोगिता बताना नहीं था। वे केवल कविता में भावों की—व्यक्तिगत अनुभूति के भावों की—स्वछन्द अभिव्यक्ति को महत्त्व देना चाहते थे। जिसे वे मुक्तछन्द कहते थे, उसमें भी एक प्रकार की झंकार और एक प्रकार का ताल विद्यमान है। परिमल की जिन रचनाओं में वस्तु-व्यंजना की ओर कवि का ध्यान है, उनमें उनका व्यक्तित्व स्पष्ट नहीं हुआ किन्तु ‘तुम और मैं’, ‘जूही की कली’ जैसी कविताओं में उनकी कल्पना उनके आवेगों के साथ होड़ करती है। यही कारण है कि ये कविताएँ बहुत लोकप्रिय हुई हैं। बड़े कथात्मक प्रयोगों में निराला जी को अधिक सफलता मिली। वे पन्त की तरह अत्यधिक वैयक्तिकतावादी कवि नहीं हैं। बड़े आख्यानों—जैसे काव्य-विषय में उन्हें वस्तु-व्यंजना का भी अवसर मिला है और कल्पना के पंख पसारने का भी मौक़ा मिल जाता है। इसीलिए उनमें निराला अधिक सफल हुए हैं। ‘तुलसीदास’, ‘राम की शक्तिपूजा’ और ‘सरोज-स्मृति’ जैसी कविताएँ उनकी सर्वोत्तम कृतियाँ हैं। इनमें भाषा का
अद्भुत प्रवाह पाठक को निरन्तर व्यस्त बनाए रहता है। कल्पना यहाँ आवेगों के सामने फीकी लगती है।”—हजारी प्रसाद द्विवेदी
‘परिमल’, ‘गीतिका’, ‘अनामिका’ और ‘तुलसीदास’ नामक काव्यकृतियों को सँजोए हुए रचनावली का यह खंड महाकवि की पूर्ववर्ती काव्य-साधना का सजीव साक्ष्य प्रस्तुत करता है। विचार-समृद्ध भावोद्रेक और सहज उदात्त स्वर निराला-काव्य की विशिष्ट पहचान है और अपनी काव्य-साधना के माध्यम से उन्होंने वस्तुओं एवं घटनाओं के भीतर पैठकर असाधारण रूप से भावात्मक सत्य का सन्धान किया है।

गुजराती आदि भारतीय भाषाएँ एक विस्तृत सेमिओटिक नेटवर्क अर्थात् संकेतन-अनुबन्ध-व्यवस्था का अन्य-समतुल्य हिस्सा हैं। मूल बात ये है कि विशेष को मिटाए बिना सामान्य अथवा साधारण की रचना करने की, और तुल्य-मूल्य संकेतकों से बुनी हुई एक संकेतन-व्यवस्था रचने की जो भारतीय क्षमता है, उसका जतन होता रहे। राष्ट्रीय या अन्तरराष्ट्रीय राज्यसत्ता, उपभोक्तावाद को बढ़ावा देनेवाली, सम्मोहक वाग्मिता के छल पर टिकी हुई धनसत्ता एवं आत्ममुग्ध, असहिष्णु विविध विचारसरणियाँ/आइडियोलॉजीज़ की तंत्रात्मक सत्ता, आदि परिबलों से शासित होने से भारतीय क्षमता को बचाते हुए, उस का संवर्धन होता रहे। गुजराती में से मेरे लेखों के हिन्दी अनुवाद करने का काम सरल तो था नहीं। गुजराती साहित्य की अपनी निरीक्षण परम्परा तथा सृजनात्मक लेखन की धारा बड़ी लम्बी है और उसी में से मेरी साहित्य तत्त्व-मीमांसा एवं कृतिनिष्ठ तथा तुलनात्मक आलोचना की परिभाषा निपजी है। उसी में मेरी सोच प्रतिष्ठित (एम्बेडेड) है। भारतीय साहित्य के गुजराती विवर्तों को ऐतिहासिक परिप्रेक्ष्य में जाने बिना मेरे लेखन का सही अनुवाद करना सम्भव नहीं है, मैं जानता हूँ। इसीलिए इन लेखों का हिन्दी अनुवाद टिकाऊ स्नेह और बड़े कौशल्य से जिन्होंने किया है, उन अनुवादक सहृदयों का मैं गहरा ऋणी हूँ। ये पुस्तक पढ़नेवाले हिन्दीभाषी सहृदय पाठकों का सविनय धन्यवाद, जिनकी दृष्टि का जल मिलने से ही तो यह पन्ने पल्लवित होंगे।
