सीता के चरित पर अनेक ग्रन्थ लिखे गए हैं, अधिकांश में उन्हें जगजननी, शक्तिस्वरूपा या देवी मानकर पूजनीया बनाया गया। किन्तु मानवी मानकर उनके मर्म के अन्तस्थल तक पहुँचने...उनके मर्म की थाह लेने की चेष्टा न के बराबर की गई। उनके प्रति किए गए राम के सारे निर्णय को उनकी मौन स्वीकृति मानकर राम की महानता, मर्यादा तथा उत्तमता को और महिमामंडित किया गया।
