Markandeya Purana
- Author Name:
Bibek Debroy
- Book Type:

- Description:
A marvellous amalgam of mythology and metaphysics, the Markandeya Purana unfolds as a series of conversations, in which the sage Markandeya is asked to answer some deeper questions raised by events in the Mahabharata. These illuminating exchanges evolve into a multi-faceted exploration of the core concepts of Hindu philosophy-from an excellent exposition of yoga and its unique attributes to a profound treatise on the worship of the goddess, the Devi Mahatmya, which also includes the popular devotional texts known as 'Chandi' or 'Durga Saptashati'. Brimming with insight and told with clarity, this luminous text is also a celebration of a complex mythological universe populated with gods and mortals, and contains within its depths many nested tales like that of Queen Madalasa and her famous song. Bibek Debroy's masterful translation draws out the subtleties of the Markandeya Purana, enabling a new generation of readers to savour its timeless riches.

Sarasvati's Gift
- Author Name:
Kavita Kane
- Book Type:

- Description:
Sarasvati, the feminine force worshipped as the goddess of learning, is a household name, yet we barely know much about the goddess. She is known as a lost river and seen as a singular goddess, never as part of a couple, such as Shiva-Parvati or Lakshmi-Narayan. In Sarasvati's Gift, Kavita Kane brings to light Sarasvati's story-the goddess of art, music and knowledge-told in the voices of nameless celestials, powerful gods and lesser mortals. The book explores her relationship with her Creator, Brahma, and their unusual marriage-a union of fiercely independent minds and the most non-conforming, unconventional of the Triumvirate couples. As these peripheral figures and silent catalysts take centre stage, we get a glimpse of an extraordinary woman and her remarkable story, obscured and buried under myths and legends.
Bhima’s Wife
- Author Name:
Kavita Kane
- Book Type:

- Description:
Before Draupadi, Hidimbi existed. She was the first Pandava daughter-in-law―an honour denied to her throughout her life, through the ages, and across centuries. She remains the overlooked wife, the forgotten queen, the unseen woman in the Mahabharata. Hidimbi was born a demoness and was a queen by right. In the vast shadows of the great Indian epic, she stands alone. She saved Bhima, bore his son, and supported the family that killed her brother. When war called, she sacrificed her only child―Ghatotkacha, the first Pandava grandson―for a cause that never truly embraced her. Why has her story never been told? Was it because she was a rakshasi, or because the epic's heroes could do no wrong? This powerful reimagining voices Hidimbi's story of love and betrayal, strength and sacrifice.

Kailas: Shiva's Abode
- Author Name:
Hemant Sharma +2
- Book Type:

- Description:
Wanderlust and the desire to know the land and society more had been fueling my wish to visit Kailas. There were many curiosities. All our major rivers have their source in the region. The largest reservoir of fresh water on earth is situated there. The celestial swans are found there. I recall that how in my childhood, my Grandmother used to describe Kailas as being akin to a dreamland. According to her, Shri Krishna has said in the Gita – Meruru shikhirinamaham – ‘Among mountains I am Kailas!’ It was Sage Mandhata who first set foot on this sacred soil. Adi Shankaracharya shed his mortal body here. Guru Nanak meditated here and Swaminarayana, the founder of the sect that bears his name, saw the vision of god here. The Ramayana and the Mahabharata mention Kailas. This is where Ravana had worshipped Lord Shiva. He wanted to take Kailas with him. Shiva guilefully dissuaded him from doing so. Arjuna performed penance here and received the Pashupata Astra from Shiva. Yudhishthir proceeded heavenwards via this route. One by one, all the family members fell by the roadside; only the faithful dog kept company. Bhasmasur, the Rakshas, a devotee of Shiva was reduced to cinders here. Today the dark shadow of civilisation has begun to fall even on Mansarovar. This lake is shrinking. The sacred water body, that once stretched across 410 square kilometres, is now shrunk to only 10 square kilometres. Consider this the rage of Nature. Had Kalidasa been alive, he would have been deeply saddened to see his beloved Himalaya in this state. Is it the same Himalaya that is described in Raghuvamsham and Kumar Sambhavam? Civilisation has reached a point where the divine dimensions of Himalaya are disturbed.
