Sometimes life takes everything we give and still feels like it’s giving nothing back. The Carved Cabinet is the English translation of the Hindi novel Naqqashidar Cabinet, originally written by Sudha Om Dhingra. It was an honor for me to bring this powerful story to English readers. As my first work of literary translation, it is more than a linguistic journey—it is an emotional one, too. At its heart, this is the story of a woman who dares to stand up when the world turns its back. Drawn into a life-altering situation, she faces deceit and danger—but instead of breaking, she finds the strength to fight back. Her courage becomes a quiet revolution. Set across the vibrant land of Punjab and the layered realities of American life, the story reminds us that resilience is universal. अंग्रेज़ी के दो शब्द हैं, जो संबंधों के लिए प्रयोग किए जाते हैं ‘कनेक्ट’ होना और ‘रिलेशन’ होना। परन्तु हम जानते हैं कि हर शब्द का अपना लहज़ा, टोन व संदर्भ तो होता ही है, उसकी अनुभूति भी अलग होती है। यहाँ कनेक्शन से अर्थ, संस्कारों से, भावनाओं से, अपने मूल से जुड़ा होना है, जिसमें वर्षों की दूरी भी कोई अर्थ नहीं रखती जबकि दूसरी ओर रिलेशनशिप में संबंध तब तक रहेगा, जब तक आप चाहें…! इसलिए रिश्तों में कनेक्शन होना चाहिए, रिलेशनशिप तो आती-जाती चीज़ है। ऐसा ही कुछ ‘चलो फिर से शुरू करें’ शीर्षक कहानी में भी देखा जा सकता है। विदेशी महिला से विवाह कर पुत्र माँ-बाप से अलग हो गया। माँ-बाप ने भी उसकी गृहस्थी में दखल देना ठीक न समझ, उससे दूरी बनाना उचित समझा। परन्तु जब उन्हें किसी परिचित द्वारा मालूम हुआ कि मार्था, कुशल को तलाक देकर, बच्चों को उसके पास छोड़ कर चली गई। इतना ही नहीं, वह उसके नाम पर तीन मिलियन का कर्ज़ ले, अपनी माँ के साथ चली गयी। यदि कुशल श्वेत अमेरिकन होता तो मार्था बच्चे साथ ले जाती परन्तु भारतीय अमेरिकन पिता के बच्चों को वह कभी स्वीकार नहीं करेगी। ऐसी मुश्किल स्थिति में कुशल को भुला दिए गए माँ-बाप ही याद आए क्योंकि उसे मालूम था कि उसके माँ-बाप ने उसे कभी भुलाया नहीं होगा। इसलिए उसने अपने पिता को फ़ोन किया और उनके पास अपने बच्चों को छोड़ कर, जीवन में एक नयी शुरूआत करने का संकल्प लिया।
