"जयशंकर प्रसाद की श्रेष्ठ कहानियाँ
महान् कथाकार और हिंदी साहित्य जगत् में कहानी को एक संपूर्ण विधा के रूप में स्थापित करनेवाले श्री जयशंकर प्रसाद का योगदान अविस्मरणीय है। कहानी के क्षेत्र में प्रसादजी के पाँच कथा-संग्रह प्रकाशित हुए-‘छाया’, ‘प्रतिध्वनि’, ‘आकाशदीप’, ‘आँधी’ तथा ‘इंद्रजाल’। इन पाँचों कहानी संग्रहों में प्रसादजी की कुल 70 कहानियाँ प्रकाशित हईं। इन कहानियों में मानव-जीवन के प्रत्येक पहलू को प्रदर्शित किया गया है। करुणा, वात्सल्य के अतिरिक्त पारिवारिक संबंधों की गहराई तक पहुँचने का प्रयास प्रसादजी ने अपनी कहानियों में बखूबी किया है। शौर्य और वीरता की भी झलक उनकी कहानियों में स्पष्ट दिखाई पड़ती है।
काव्य, नाटक, कथा-साहित्य, आलोचना, दर्शन, इतिहास सभी क्षेत्रों में उनकी प्रतिभा अद्वितीय रही। ‘कामायनी’ जैसे महाकाव्य; ‘चंद्रगुप्त’, ‘स्कंदगुप्त’, ‘अजातशत्रु’ जैसे नाटक; ‘कंकाल’, ‘तितली’ जैसे उपन्यास तथा अनेक विशिष्ट कहानियाँ उनकी रचनात्मक दृष्टि को सार्थक करती हैं।
