He started by dropping off his widowed mother at her family's home, initially at Elanhippoyil, then heading to Bombay- a solitary voyage into the vast, bewildering world, as SKP describes. This haunting autobiographical novel spans about 60 years of history, reflecting on themes of memory, nostalgia, hardship, dreams, and numbness. It concludes with a monologue: "Forgive me, the representative of the new generation of Athiranippadam, forgive me for trespassing into your land, and consider me merely an antique collector, a non-native!"

- Description: बेहद सहज और सरल ढंग से क़िस्सागोई की शैली में लिखा गया यह उपन्यास बंगाली समाज के स्वभाव और चरित्र का सच्चा एवं प्रामाणिक चित्र उपस्थित करता है। महानगरीय जीवन की भागमभाग और गहमागहमी से ऊबी–थकी अविवाहित कामकाजी युवती, अरा, जब अपनी बड़ी बहन स्मृति के घर बिलासपुर छुट्टियाँ बिताने पहुँचती है तो उसके सामने धीरे–धीरे जीवन का सर्वथा नया अर्थ खुलता चला जाता है। उसके अभावग्रस्त एकाकी जीवन की थकान दूर होती है और वह जीवन–राग एवं प्रकृति–राग से लबरेज तरोताज़ा होकर कलकत्ता लौटती है। हर जीवन महाजीवन है और ढोने के लिए नहीं, जीने के लिए है—जीवन का यह पाठ अरा को प्रकृति से समृद्ध आदिवासी अंचल छत्तीसगढ़ की गोद में बसे बिलासपुर में मिलता है। महानगरीय जीवन–बोध और प्रकृत आदिवासी जीवन–बोध की टकराहट की अनुगूँज लिए यह छोटी–सी औपन्यासिक कृति एक सूने सितार के तार छेड़ने की तरह है। यह सितार है ‘अरा’ जिसके तार छेड़ता है ‘परदेसिया’ और जिसकी झंकृति पाठक के दिलो–दिमाग़ में देर–देर तक, दूर–दूर तक बनी रहती है। बांग्ला के अग्रिम पंक्ति के कथाकार बुद्धदेव गुहा ने अपनी व्यापक यात्राओं के दौरान पहाड़ों, जंगलों और नदियों को काफ़ी नज़दीक एवं आत्मीयता के साथ देखा है और अपनी रचनाओं के ज़रिए पाठकों में प्रकृति से प्रेम करने की ललक जगाई है। उनके साहित्य में स्त्री–पुरुष प्रेम से लेकर जनसाधारण तक के प्रति रागात्मक सम्बन्धों का विस्तार देखा जा सकता है। यह उपन्यास इस बात की बहुत ही सशक्त तरीक़े से पुष्टि करता है।
