लोहे के पंख दलित समुदाय से आने वाले एक व्यक्ति की आपबीती के जरिये भारतीय किसान-मजदूरों के कठिन-कठोर जीवन-संघर्ष का जैसा ज़मीनी और विशद चित्र प्रस्तुत करता है, वैसा कम ही उपन्यासों में देखने को मिलता है। आज़ादी के पहले और बाद के लगभग तीन दशकों की पृष्ठभूमि में विन्यस्त और बिहार के ग्रामीण और शहरी समाज को समेटे यह उपन्यास तत्कालीन परिस्थितियों को अंकित करते हुए जिन सामाजिक-राजनीतिक विषमताओं को उजागर करता है वे आज भी समाप्त नहीं हुई हैं। सामन्ती वर्चस्व और अत्याचार, दलितों का शोषण-उत्पीड़न, राजनीतिक दलों की कथनी-करनी का अन्तर...आज भी आम हैं। ‘लोहे के पंख’ जिस समय—बीसवीं सदी के छठे दशक में—लिखा गया था उस समय हिन्दी साहित्य में दलित प्रश्न इतना केन्द्रीय और मुखर नहीं था। इस नजरिये से देखें तो हिमांशु श्रीवास्तव का एक दलित पात्र को अपने उपन्यास का नायक बनाकर उसके मुख से ही समय-समाज की पड़ताल कराना विशेष महत्व रखता है।

Raghavendra Patil (b.1951) belongs to the postmodernist group of writers in Kannada. Like his predecessors, U.R. Anantamurthy, Yahvant Chittal, Tejasvi and Shantinath Desai, he arrived at the novel through the short story. The Chariot (Teru), which won him the Sahitya Akademi Award, is his second novel. Though Patil belongs to the postmodern era, he does not share the thematic concerns or techniques of Western postmodernism. He is closer to the nativistic movement, which has already produced major writers like Chandrasekhar Kambar and Kum. Veerabhadrappa. He has also inherited some of the qualities of his famous uncle Anandakanda, such as an interest in local history and closeness to rural life. The story that Patil tells in The Chariot spans more than a hundred and fifty years, beginning with the years when the Peshva extended his rule to North Karnataka and ending with the years after the Emergency, and it relates to the Belagavi region, with its epicentre in an imagined but fully realised village named Dharamanatti. The novel offers two images of Teru, which in Kannada means both the chariot and the festival associated with it. The first is centred on an atrocious human sacrifice made in the name of religion by an autocratic ruler, and the second, distanced in time by a century and a half, mirrors the change from the feudal order to a democratic one, where religious superstition and feudal practices have been replaced by scepticism and the politics of power. The novel is remarkable for its innovative technique, which handles myth and reality with equal success.

Raghuvar Prasad teaches Mathematics at a local college. He lives in a one-room rental eight miles away from his place of work. He travels to work by jitney, cramming into whatever space is left by other passengers, milk cans, winter blankets and vegetable baskets. The mode of transportation is unreliable; jitneys won't stop for him when they are full. A sadhu atop an elephant befriends him, offering him a ride to the college on his elephant. The Head of the Mathematics Department suggests that Raghuvar Prasad borrow the bicycle which seems to have been abandoned on the college verandah. Raghuvar Prasad tries these variations and wonders whether he shouldn't move closer to the college to save on travel costs. He has just been married. The day his wife Sonsi, arrives in town to begin their domestic life together, Raghuvar Prasad happens to come home mounted on an elephant. She imagines elephants are part of Raghuvar Prasad's usual lifestyle. Vinod Kumar Shukla's apparently slight novel reaches into the depths of feeling Raghuvar Prasad and Sonsi have for one another and for the world of lower-middle-class neighbours among whom they belong. Their possessions are meagre: the single room barely accommodates their bed, the water pot, the kitchen utensils and the tin box in which Sonsi keeps her precious things. But there is a magical place beyond the window that sustains Raghuvar Prasad's and Sonsi's spirit. This window lived in a wall.

The novel Dika, which means "direction" in Konkani, tells the story of a farming family from the lower middle class. It is set in the North Kanara district of Karnataka and offers a vivid portrayal of the socio-cultural life of the region's inhabitants. The plot follows Deepak and his family as they struggle to adapt to a new way of life in their village after the sudden death of Deepak's father, a policeman. Ultimately, Deepak leads his family to a new and free existence, breaking free from the constraints imposed on them by society. This is best exemplified in the novel's closing scene, where Deepak witnesses a lone crow moving eastward, away from its flock, in a new direction.

Parva is a novel written by S. L. Bhyrappa in the Kannada language. It is a retelling of the Sanskrit epic Mahabharata, narrated through the personal reflections of the principal characters. The novel is widely acclaimed as a modern classic. Parva is among Bhyrappa's most widely debated and popular works and is considered by many to be his greatest.

Dr. Geetha Nagabhushana's work primarily focuses on the struggles of the distressed, exploited, and naïve individuals from slums or the lowest strata of the Hindu caste system. Her unique storytelling provides a glimpse into real-life experiences that resonate deeply with us, rather than simply presenting fictional characters. The Kannada dialect used in "Baduku" deserves special recognition for its authenticity and cultural richness. Throughout the novel, the hardships faced by those in the lowest tiers of the Varna system are depicted without any apologies. The portrayal of women's struggles in "Baduku" serves as a critique of patriarchal society. The novel offers a comprehensive view of society, addressing various forms of atrocity and oppression, including issues related to class, caste, and gender, as well as the challenges faced by both urban and rural downtrodden communities. There is no fair treatment found in any of these intersections.

‘मुझे चाँद चाहिए’ की जगह ‘मुझे सूरज चाहिए’ की सशक्त दावेदारी ठोकती तीन अलग-अलग आयु वर्ग की स्त्रियाँ। जो अपने ही साथ भगवान या तथाकथित भगवान की भी आज़ादी की माँग करती हैं। मुझे चाँद चाहिए ये इच्छा जहाँ एक सादगी भरी सौम्य ऊँचाई की, अस्तित्व की माँग हैं। वहीं मुझे सूरज चाहिए अधिक उग्र किंतु आत्मविश्वास से सूरज को सम्भाल लेने की भावना को इंगित करती है। ये किसी ऐसे फ़रियादी की फ़रियाद भी लगती है जो सहनशक्ति के आख़िरी छोर पर आ पहुँचा है और अब चाँद की शीतलता भरी ऊँचाई नहीं आकाश के भाल पर चमकते सूरज की गर्मी ही उसे ठंडक दे सकती है। आकाश माथुर का लिखा ये उपन्यास शिवना प्रकाशन से आया है। जिसका विमोचन 2024 के विश्व पुस्तक मेला नई दिल्ली में हुआ। इस से पहले उनका उपन्यास ‘उमेदा-एक योद्धा नर्तकी’ सफलता अर्जित कर चुका है और आज भी चर्चित है। इस उपन्यास की कहानी शुरू होती है एक सम्भ्रांत परिवार की मध्य-आयु की एक विधवा के सादे जीवन के साथ जिसे एक भरा-पूरा संयुक्त परिवार बहुत सम्मान के साथ देखता है और पूजता है। साथ ही परिवार की एक पुत्र-वधू और उसकी बेटी के अपने-अपने पीढ़िगत संघर्षों को उपन्यास बहुत संवेदना के साथ चित्रित करता है। मध्य-प्रदेश के ग्रामीण समाज की कुरितियों को बहुत विस्तार से आकाश स्पष्ट करते हैं। ये सामाजिक कुरीतियाँ आख़िर तो स्त्री के मन और तन को रौंद कर की ख़ुद को जीवित रखें हुए हैं। वो फिर चाहे शादी की आटा-साटा प्रथा हो या नातरा। आटा-साटा में जहाँ वार या वधू के ससुराल के ही किसी महिला या पुरुष से घर की किसी महिला या पुरुष की शादी कर दी जाती हैं। यानि ये ज़रुरी नहीं आप ससुराल में जाकर अपनी बहन के ननदोई ही बने, आप उसके दामाद भी बन सकते हैं। जिन अयोग्य पात्रों की शादी ना हो रही हो वहाँ प्रभावी परिवार दूसरे परिवार पर इस तरह का दबाव बना लेता है। जिस में आर्थिक कमजोरी सबसे बड़ा कारण होता है। इसी प्रकार नातरा में दूसरी शादी आपसी सहमति से तलाक़ ले कर ली जाती है और दूसरी शादी के एवज़ में परिवार बड़ी रक़म कमाता है। इसमें स्त्री को एक घर से उठ दूसरे घर जा बसने की पीड़ा से गुजरना पड़ता है। रमा ऐसे ही आटा-साटा की चपेट में आकर अपने ही भाई की विधवा सास बन बैठी थी। एक पढ़ी-लिखी उमंगो से भरी लड़की की एक बूढ़े व्यक्ति से शादी, उसके कौन-कौन से अरमानो को तिरोहित करती है इसका वर्णन लेखक ने बहुत संवेदनशीलता के साथ किया है। जंगल को, प्रकृति को सम्मान देना और पूजना हमारी परम्परा है और ये उसकी जीवनदायिनी शक्ति का सम्मान व आदर है। जिसे पूजते-पूजते हम उसकी पूजा में उसे ही नष्ट करने लगते हैं और कर्मकांडों में फँस कर स्वयं की और भगवान की ग़ुलामी की नीवों को पोषित करते हैं। इस भाव की विवेचना, कारण और निवारण पर लेखक ने खुल कर कलम चलाई है और विस्तार के साथ बहुत ही सुलझी हुई भाषा में इस विषय को बरता है। उसमें जहाँ लेखक पर्यावरण संरक्षण और आदिवासी समाज के उपेक्षा के सवाल उठाते हैं। वहीं वो धर्मांधता पर भी कटाक्ष करने से नहीं चूकते। आकाश के स्त्री पात्र परिस्थितियों के शिकार अवश्य हैं, लेकिन कमज़ोर नहीं हैं। और अंत में सशक्त रूप से अपने हिस्से के सूरज के लिए खड़े होते हैं। यहाँ अच्छी बात ये है कि वे एक दूसरे के दुश्मन नहीं है और बहनापे की सहायता से पित्र-सत्ता और रूढ़ियों के ख़िलाफ़ खड़ी होती हैं। जो आकाश के लेखन को सामयिक बनाता है। उपन्यास की भाषा देशकाल - अनुकूल है और सहज है। अपने पात्रों के साथ। एडिटिंग अच्छी है, इसलिए उपन्यास को बहुत अधिक लम्बाई तक ना खींच कर विषयानुसर लेखक कम में ही अपनी बात रख पाने में समर्थ है। जिसके लिए लेखक को बहुत शुभकामनाएँ। ये एक सामाजिक सरोकारों से भरा उपन्यास है जो भगवान सहित अपने पात्रों की वकालत सफलता से करता नज़र आता है। वन और प्रकृति के कुछ द्रश्य बहुत ही सुंदरता से लिखे गए हैं। वहीं स्त्रियों के सन्दर्भ में एक जगह आकाश लिखते हैं। — ‘महिलाओं की ख़ासियत है कि वे उम्र में छोटी होकर भी अपने से बड़ों पर मातृत्व न्योछावर कर देती हैं। जबकि एक छोटा पुरुष इस तरह का व्यवहार अपने से बड़े पुरुष के साथ नहीं कर सकता। असल में महिलाओं का मूल ही प्रेम है।’ वहींं एक जगह वो लिखते हैं। — ‘स्त्रियों के मन और तन पर उनका अपना अधिकार नहीं है। उस पर भी पुरुष, धर्म, समाज और पता नहीं किस-किस का क़ब्ज़ा है।’ सती को पूजना भी कहीं ना कहीं सती-प्रथा को अभी तक सही मानना ही है, परिवर्तन अपने जीवन में ला सकती है तो स्त्री ही ला सकती हैं, जैसी हिम्मत देता आकाश माथुर का ये नया उपन्यास निश्चय ही पठनीय है।

‘काठ का उल्लू’ को ‘दोआबा’ पत्रिका में प्रकाशित करते हुए, सम्पादकीय के अन्तर्गत एक महत्त्वपूर्ण टिप्पणी की गई थी कि यह उपन्यास अपनी थीम के कारण पाठकों के बीच लोकप्रिय होगा। प्रश्न उठता है कि इस उपन्यास की ‘थीम’ है क्या? निःसन्देह इसका उत्तर एक शब्द में नहीं दिया जा सकता है। ‘काठ के उल्लू’ की थीम के कई स्तर हैं जो प्याज के छिलके की भाँति परत दर परत खुलते चले जाते हैं। सपनों में पलती नौकरशाही, अभिजात्य वर्ग की ढँकी-छुपी सच्चाई, स्याह-सफेद के बीच खिलवाड़ करती राजनीति... और एक सामान्य-सी लड़की को ‘दलित इकाई’ के रूप में बदल देने की चतुराई। अर्थात इस उपन्यास में हमारे समाज के इतने रंग हैं कि उन सबको मिला कर यदि ‘रंगामेज़ी’ शैली में कोई चित्र बनाया जाए तो वह बदरंग ही होगा, आकर्षक भले हो। जाहिर है कि यह एक जटिल यथार्थ है, जिसे एक छोटे से उपन्यास में व्यक्त कर देना आसान काम नहीं था। मगर, पल्लवी प्रसाद ने उसे बखूबी कर दिखाया है। इस उपन्यास में कई अन्य यथार्थ भी दर्ज हैं। जैसे गाँवों का ‘आधुनिक’ हो जाना, हर व्यक्ति का लगभग ‘आम आदमी’ हो जाना और अन्ततः कृष्णकान्त जैसे महत्वाकांक्षी व्यक्ति का ‘काठ का उल्लू’ बन जाना। उल्लू का पसन्दीदा समय ‘अँधेरा’ पूरे उपन्यास में आदि से अन्त तक छाया हुआ है। मगर लेखिका ने उसमें भी रोशनी की एक ‘झिरी’ देख ली है। वह है एक बूढ़ी स्त्री जो गाँव में रहती है और जो किसी की माँ है, किसी की दादी तो किसी की परदादी। वास्तव में इस ‘झिरी’ ने ही इस उपन्यास को वह सार्थकता बख्शी है, जो उसका मूल उदेश्य प्रतीत होती है। पल्लवी प्रसाद का यह उपन्यास ऐसे समय में आया है जबकि अभिजात्य वर्ग में ही नहीं बल्कि सामान्य जीवन में भी पारिवारिक सम्बन्धों की दीवारें दरक रही हैं। इसलिए इस उपन्यास का अपना अलग ही महत्त्व है। —अब्दुल बिस्मिल्लाह
