विमल चन्द्र पाण्डेय का जन्म 20 अक्टूबर, 1981 को बनारस, उत्तर प्रदेश में हुआ। मूल रूप से गाँव कड़सर, जिला बलिया के निवासी। शुरुआती पढ़ाई बनारस में ही। फिर दिल्ली विश्वविद्यालय से पत्रकारिता की पढ़ाई और पाँच साल तक पत्रकारिता करने के बाद इस्तीफा। वर्तमान में फ्रीलांसिंग, लेखन और फिल्म-निर्देशन। उनकी प्रकाशित कृतियाँ हैं- ‘डर’, ‘मस्तूलों के इर्द-गिर्द’, ‘उत्तर प्रदेश की खिड़की’, 'मेरी प्रिय कहानियाँ' और ‘मारण मंत्र’ (कहानी-संग्रह); ‘भले दिनों की बात थी’ (उपन्यास); ‘ई इलहाब्बाद है भइया’ (संस्मरण)। उनकी कहानियों और कविताओं के अनुवाद कन्नड़, मराठी, मलयालम, तमिल, गुजराती, रूसी और अंग्रेज़ी भाषाओं में हुए हैं। उनकी पहली फ़िल्म है ‘द होली फिश’ जिसके निर्देशन के अलावा लेखन और निर्माण भी उन्होंने स्वयं ही किया। दूसरी फ़िल्म ‘धतूरा’ रिलीज के लिए तैयार है। उन्हें ‘भारतीय ज्ञानपीठ नवलेखन पुरस्कार’ और ‘मीरा स्मृति पुरस्कार’ से सम्मानित किया गया है।

सन् 1956 में तिब्बत का दरवाज़ा विदेशियों के लिए लगभग बन्द हो चुका था और राजनैतिक कारणों से भारत के साथ तिब्बत का सम्पर्क भी लगभग टूट चुका था। उन्हीं दिनों, बिना किसी तैयारी के, बिमल दे घर से भागे और नेपाली तीर्थयात्रियों के एक दल में सम्मिलित हो ल्हासा तक जा पहुँचे। उस समय उनकी उम्र मात्र पन्द्रह वर्ष थी। यात्रियों में वह नवीन मौनी बाबा। ल्हासा में उन्होंने तीर्थयात्रियों का दल छोड़ा, और वहाँ से अकेले ही कैलास खंड की ओर कूच कर गए। 'महातीर्थ के अन्तिम यात्री' में उसी रोमांचक यात्रा-अनुभाव का वर्णन है। बिमल दे ने स्वयं इसे ‘एक भिखमंगे की डायरी’ कहा है। किन्तु इस पुस्तक में मिलेगा तिब्बत का दैनंदिन जीवन तथा महातीर्थ का पूर्ण विवरण।

जीवन-पथ पर चलते हुए कितने लोग, कितनी स्थितियाँ, विविध प्रसंग, विविध रसों का रसास्वादन, भिन्न-भिन्न शहरों और निर्जन स्थलों पर अनेकानेक भावों के संवाद और स्वरों के गान सुनने को मिलते हैं। वहीं विरोधाभाषी स्पर्शों की अनुभूति भी होती है। कुछ स्पर्श ऐसे, जो कोमल और कठोर, कुछ भी हों, भुलाए नहीं भूलते। कुछ प्रसंगों को हम दूसरों को बार-बार सुनाते हैं। उसमें हर बार कुछ-न-कुछ नवीनता जुड़ती जाती है। पर मूल प्रसंग तो वही रहता है। प्रसिद्ध साहित्यकार स्व. मृदुला सिन्हाजी के दायित्व का तकाजा घुमक्कड़ी था; वे पिछले चालीस वर्षों में देश-विदेश घूमती ही रहीं। अतीव संवेदनशील होने के कारण अपनी अनुभूतियों को सँजो लेती थीं। उनकी लेखनी और कोरे कागज उनके जीवन-संगी थे ही। ट्रेन में हों या प्लेन में, प्रसंग उनके मानस से उतरकर कोरे कागज को भरते रहे। इन लेखों में व्यक्तिगत, पारिवारिक, सामाजिक, प्रादेशिक और समाज में स्थित राष्ट्रीय एकता की पहचान संबंधित आलेख भी आ गए। सुदूर अंडमान निकोबार में कोई घटना घटी, उसकी रिपोर्ट ‘दुनिया मेरे आगे’ में छपने के बाद कश्मीर के लोगों को भी अपने आसपास की घटना लगी। तभी तो सब ओर के पाठक उल्लसित होते रहे और इन लेखों की लोकप्रियता लेखिका के लिए समाज के गुण-दोषों, रिश्ते-नातों के विभिन्न तासीर के आकलन का एक माध्यम बन गई। इन लेखों में मनुष्य जीवन ही नहीं, पशु-पक्षी, पेड़-पौधे सभी की कहानियाँ हैं। अपने आकार-प्रकार में भले ही ये आलेख बहुत बड़े नहीं हैं, फिर भी इनकी गहराई और गंभीरता से इनकार नहीं किया जा सकता। हास्य-व्यंग्य है तो सोचने के लिए विवश करनेवाले प्रसंग भी। विश्वास है कि अब एक सूत्र में गूँथकर हर मौसम में खिलनेवाले विभिन्न सुगंधों और रंगों के फूलों से बना अनुभूतियों का गुच्छा पाठकों को अवश्य आनंद देगा।
