वेदों में ‘मनुष्य’ और ‘मानुष’ एक साथ कैसे चलते हैं? कौन किसका अपभ्रंश है? अगर मनुष्य में षष्ठी विभक्ति है तो मानुष में कौन-सी विभक्ति है जिसके बलबूते पहले की व्युत्पत्ति मनु की सन्तति की जाती है? वैदिक ‘मान’ का अर्थ है घर, जो घर में रहता है, वह ‘मानुष’ है और जो वन में रहता है, वह ‘वनमानुष’ है; इसीलिए ‘वनमनुष्य’ पद नहीं चलता है। हिन्दी भाषी क्षेत्र की लोकबोलियों में मानुस शब्द चलता है, मनुष्य नहीं। इसलिए यह दावा करना कि लोकबोलियों के सभी शब्द संस्कृत के अपभ्रंश हैं, ग़लत होगा। भोजपुरी में जानवरों की माँद को आज भी मान/मनान कहा जाता है। लोकबोलियों में मनुष्य को ‘मनई’ भी कहा जाता है यानी मान (घर) में रहनेवाला जैसे कि मान (घर) में रहनेवाले को खड़ी बोली में ‘मानव’ कहा जाता है। ‘मान’ का क्रियामूल ‘मा’ है जिसका अर्थ होता है—निर्माण करना। यह क्रियामूल मठ, मण्डप, मन्दिर, माँद, मान, मनान, माड़ो—सभी में मौजूद है। ‘मानुष’ तत्सम है, ‘मनुष्य’ तद्भव है।
संस्कृत में बहुत सारे शब्द मिलेंगे जो लोकबोलियों के आधार पर गढ़े गए हैं परन्तु ग़लती से उसे तत्सम मान लिया जाता है। कारण कि हमारी भाषावैज्ञानिक स्थापना रही है कि संस्कृत पुरानी भाषा है, इसलिए लोकबोलियों के शब्द तद्भव हैं जबकि संस्कृत का पहला लम्बा अभिलेख 150 ई. में पश्चिमी भारत के जूनागढ़ से मिलता है। प्राकृत के अभिलेख भारत में सबसे पुराने हैं। वैदिक भाषा पुरानी है, वैदिक संस्कृति भी पुरानी है तब इस तथ्य की भी पड़ताल की जानी चाहिए कि वैदिक युग के तथाकथित सोने के सिक्के ‘निष्क’ कहाँ गए जबकि धातु के सिक्के सबसे पहले गौतम बुद्ध के युग में मिलते हैं।
भाषा का समाजशास्त्र इस बात का जवाब देगा कि मागधी प्राकृत के साथ संस्कृत के आचार्यों ने दोयम दर्जे का व्यवहार क्यों किया है।

The many hours of solitude in prison gave the author the opportunity to deeply analyse the Hindu-Muslim problem, towards which he has offered new and hopeful insights. The book is sensitively written, full of intimate anecdotes, not without political insight, and makes very interesting reading. It offers not only a personal viewpoint, but a glimpse into the lives of all detenus.
