मार्जार संस्कृत भाषा का शब्द है। इसका अर्थ होता है—बिल्ली। सामान्यतया बिल्ली से घरेलू बिल्ली का बोध होता है; किन्तु जीवविज्ञान में इस शब्द का विस्तृत अर्थों में प्रयोग किया गया है एवं इसके अन्तर्गत बाघ और सिंह से लेकर पालतू बिल्ली तक को सम्मिलित किया गया है। ये सभी जीव मार्जार परिवार के जीव कहलाते हैं।
