- Description: ब्रिटिशकालीन भारतीय पराधीनता का एक त्रासद अध्याय है गिरमिटिया। गिरमिटिया यानी एग्रीमेंट के तहत देश के बाहर कुलीगीरी करने के लिए जबरन भेजा जाना। भूख, बेरोजगारी, उत्पीड़न या गृह कलह के चलते घर-परिवार छोड़नेवाले स्त्री-पुरुषों की मजबूरी का फायदा उठाकर उन्हें झाँसा देकर अज्ञात देश में भेज देना। सन् 1879 से लेकर सन् 1916 तक 60553 भारतीय ‘गिरमिटिया’ बनाकर फिजीद्वीप भेजे जा चुके थे। इन अभिशप्त भारतीयों के शापमोचन के लिए जो लोग आगे आये उनमें एक नाम था पण्डित तोताराम सनाढ्य का। कौन थे ये तोतारामजी? क्या रिश्ता बनता था उनका फिजी से और गिरमिटिया भारतीयों से? परदुखकातर एक सामान्य भारतीय जिन्होंने खुद इक्कीस वर्षों तक गिरमिटिया की यातना-भरी जिन्दगी जी; मुक्ति संघर्ष का आगाज किया। यूँ तो ‘गिरमिटिया’ प्रथा पर प्रेमचन्द और प्रसाद समेत कई दिग्गजों ने लिखा है पर स्वयं का भोगा हुआ सच सिर्फ और सिर्फ तोताराम सनाढ्य का ही है। इतिहास के अध्येताओं से लेकर आम पाठकों तक के लिए जानकारियों से भरी एक रोचक और जरूरी किताब!

- Description: आज से लगभग 2300 वर्ष पहले मगध पर घनानंद नामक एक कुटिल और क्रूर शासक का राज्य था। वह बात-बात पर लोगों को फाँसी दे देता था। ऐसे निरंकुश शासक ने जब चाणक्य नाम के एक विद्वान् का अपमान किया तो उसने नंद को समूल नष्ट करने का प्रण ले लिया। बालक चंद्रगुप्त भी नंद का सताया हुआ था, वह भी येन-केन-प्रकारेण नंद से प्रतिशोध लेना चाहता था। अनायास ही चाणक्य और चंद्रगुप्त की भेंट हो गई। चाणक्य ने चंद्रगुप्त को कडे़ अनुशासन में रखकर अस्त्र-शस्त्र के ज्ञान के साथ राजनीति की शिक्षा भी दी। अनुकूल अवसर मिलते ही चंद्रगुप्त ने घनानंद पर हमला कर दिया और उसका समूल नाश करके मौर्य साम्राज्य की स्थापना की। मौर्य साम्राज्य पूर्व में बंगाल की खाड़ी से पश्चिम में अरब सागर तक फैला था। उत्तर में चंद्रगुप्त के राज्य की सीमा दक्षिणी अफगानिस्तान और ईरान तक फैली थी। उसने वृहद् भारत पर एकच्छत्र अनुकरणीय राज्य किया। जीवन के उत्तरार्ध में अपने पुत्र बिंदुसार को राज्य सौंपकर वह कर्नाटक में श्रवणबेलगोला चला गया और एक भिक्षुक के रूप में अपना जीवन बिताया। चंद्रगुप्त मौर्य का निर्लिप्त जीवन सचमुच अनुकरणीय है।
