- Description: लेखकों और कलाकारों के पत्रों में एक विशेष क़िस्म की ऊष्मा होती है। कारण कि वे अपने समय को न सिर्फ़ गहराई से देखते हैं, बल्कि उस पर एक विशेष नज़रिये से विचार भी करते हैं। इस पुस्तक में रामविलास शर्मा द्वारा लिखे गए पत्रों को खोजकर संकलित किया गया है। रामविलास जी हिन्दी आलोचना के बड़े स्तम्भ रहे हैं, और आज भी हैं। उन्होंने भाषा तथा साहित्य पर विपुल लेखन किया। इन पत्रों में हमें उनका एक अलग और बहुत आत्मीय रूप दिखाई देता है। उनके पत्रों को लेकर कुछ पुस्तकें पहले भी प्रकाशित हो चुकी हैं लेकिन उनमें उनके लिखे पत्र कम ही हैं। उन्हें लिखे गए पत्रों की संख्या ज़्यादा है। उनके लिखे पत्रों को एक ज़िल्द में उपलब्ध कराने की मंशा ही इस पुस्तक की वजह बनी। इन पत्रों को प्राप्त करने के लिए सम्बन्धित लोगों से पत्र-व्यवहार से लेकर साहित्यिक पत्रिकाओं में विज्ञापन तक दिए गए। इसके अलावा भी हर सम्भावित व्यक्ति से सम्पर्क किया गया, तब जाकर यह सामग्री एकत्र हो पाई। इन पत्रों में रामविलास जी की सहज संवेदना तो दिखाई देती ही है, पत्र पाने वालों की दैनन्दिन समस्याओं के प्रति गम्भीर सहानुभूति भी दृष्टिगोचर होती है। रामविलास जी की साहित्येतर रुचियों की जानकारी भी हमें इनसे मिलती है। कहने की ज़रूरत नहीं कि यह एक दस्तावेज़ी और संग्रहणीय पुस्तक है।

- Description: (आधुनिक हिन्दी कविता के) तृतीय उत्थान में आकर परिस्थिति बहुत बदल गई । आन्दोलनों ने सक्रिय रूप धारण किया और गाँव–गाँव राजनीतिक और आर्थिक परतन्त्रता के विरो/ा की भावना जगाई गई । सरकार से कुछ माँगने के स्थान पर अब कवियों की वाणी देशवासियों को ही ‘स्वतन्त्रता देवी की वेदी पर बलिदान’ होने को प्रोत्साहित करने में लगी । अब जो आन्दोलन चले वे सामान्य जन–समुदाय को भी साथ लेकर चले ।––– अब संसार के प्राय% सारे सभ्य भाग एक–दूसरे के लिए खुले हुए हैं । इससे एक भू–खंड में उठी हवाएँ दूसरे भू–खंड में शिक्षित वर्गों तक तो अवश्य ही पहुँच जाती हैं । यदि उनका सामंजस्य दूसरे भू–खंड की परिस्थिति के साथ हो जाता है तो उस परिस्थिति के अनुरूप शक्तिशाली आन्दोलन चल पड़ते हैं । इसी नियम के अनुसार शोषक साम्राज्यवाद के विरुद्ध राजनीतिक आन्दोलन के अतिरिक्त यहाँ भी किसान–आन्दोलन, मजदूर–आन्दोलन, अछूत–आन्दोलन इत्यादि कई आन्दोलन एक विराट् परिवर्तनवाद के नाना व्यावहारिक अंगों के रूप में चले । श्री रामधारी सिंह दिनकर, बालकृष्ण शर्मा ‘नवीन’, माखनलाल चतुर्वेदी आदि कई कवियों की वाणी द्वारा ये भिन्न–भिन्न प्रकार के आन्दोलन प्रति/वनित हुए ।

नामवर सिंह न सीमित अर्थों में साहित्यकार हैं, न आलोचक। इसके बावजूद वे इन साक्षात्कारों में मुख्यत: आलोचक के रूप में उभरते हैं। नामवर जी का आलोचक समाज में बातचीत करते हुए, वाद-विवाद-संवाद करते, प्रश्न-प्रतिप्रश्न करते सक्रिय रहता है और विचार, तर्क और संवाद की उस प्रक्रिया से गुज़रता है जो आलोचना की बुनियादी भूमि है। आलोचना लिखित हो या वाचिक, उसके पीछे बुनियादी प्रक्रिया है—पढ़ना, विवेचना, विचारना। तर्क और संवाद। नामवर जी के साक्षात्कारों में इसका व्यापक समावेश है। इनसे गुज़रते हुए हम महसूस करते हैं कि वह किसी रचना को हमेशा नई और अपनी तरह से पढ़ने की कोशिश करते हैं और इस तरह ‘पढ़ते’ हुए वे लगातार नई तरह से ‘सोचते’ और ‘विचारते’ हुए सामने आते हैं। उनकी वाचिक आलोचना मूल्यांकन की ऊपरी सीढ़ी तक पहुँचती है। निकष बनाती है। प्रतिमानों पर बहस करती है। उसमें ‘लिखित’ की तरह की ‘कौंध’ मौजूद होती है।
इस पुस्तक में संकलित साक्षात्कारों का विषय-क्षेत्र अत्यन्त विस्तृत है। मार्क्सवाद, समकालीन विश्व, पूँजीवाद, नवसाम्राज्यवाद, नवफ़ासीवाद और भारतीय लोकतंत्र के विरूपीकरण से लेकर कविता, कहानी, उपन्यास और निजी जीवन तक—साहित्य और देश-दुनिया की उनकी समझ का एक स्पष्ट प्रतिबिम्ब यहाँ मिलता है। उनकी विश्व-दृष्टि का रूपायन इनमें हुआ है।
