यह एक ऐसे बालक की कहानी है, जो लकड़ी के कोयले से ताजा पुताई वाली दीवारों पर चित्र बनाते हुए बड़ा हुआ और जिसने आगे चलकर अपने कलात्मक कौशल के दम पर ‘राजा’ की पदवी प्राप्त की। अपनी पत्नी के घर में काम करनेवाली एक नायर महिला का चित्र बनाने पर उन्हें जितने क्रोध का सामना करना पड़ा, उतना ही सम्मान भी मिला। अनेक आलोचकों और प्रशंसकों का ध्यान महाराष्ट्र की महिला सुगंधा के साथ उनके गहरे संबंध की ओर आकृष्ट हुआ, जो उनके सर्वाधिक प्रसिद्ध चित्रों की मेनका, दमयंती और उर्वशी बनी।
रवि वर्मा भारत के सबसे प्रसिद्ध चित्रकार थे। वे जितने विवादित थे, उतने ही प्रतिभावान। उन्होंने हिंदू देवी-देवताओं को मंदिर से बाहर लाकर सामान्य लोगों के घरों तक पहुँचाया और अपने ब्रश के स्पर्श से इतिहास की अनेक हस्तियों एवं पलों को अमर कर दिया। यूरोपीय कला से पूरी तरह प्रभावित वर्मा को अनेक अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्पर्धाओं में यश मिला और देश की कई रियासतों ने उन्हें सम्मानित किया। ऐसा कहा जाता है कि स्वामी विवेकानंद ने उनसे अपना छायाचित्र बनवाया था।
