साहित्य में मंज़रनामा एक मुकम्मिल फ़ॉर्म है। यह एक ऐसी विधा है जिसे पाठक बिना किसी रुकावट के रचना का मूल आस्वाद लेते हुए पढ़ सकें। लेकिन मंज़रनामा का अन्दाज़े-बयान अमूमन मूल रचना से अलग हो जाता है या यूँ कहें कि वह मूल रचना का इन्टरप्रेटेशन हो जाता है।</p> <p>मंज़रनामा पेश करने का एक उद्देश्य तो यह है कि पाठक इस फ़ॉर्म से रू-ब-रू हो सकें और दूसरा यह कि टी.वी. और सिनेमा में दिलचस्पी रखनेवाले लोग यह देख-जान सकें कि किसी कृति को किस तरह मंज़रनामे की शक्ल दी जाती है। टी.वी. की आमद से मंज़रनामों की ज़रूरत में बहुत इज़ाफ़ा हो गया है।</p> <p>कथाकार, शायर, गीतकार, पटकथाकार गुलज़ार ने लीक से हटकर शरत्चन्द्र की-सी संवेदनात्मक मार्मिकता, सहानुभूति और करुणा से ओत-प्रोत कई उम्दा फ़िल्मों का निर्देशन किया जिनमें ‘मेरे अपने’, ‘अचानक’, ‘परिचय’, ‘आँधी’, ‘मौसम’, ‘ख़ुशबू’, ‘मीरा’, ‘किनारा’, ‘नमकीन’, ‘लेकिन’, ‘लिबास’, और ‘माचिस’ जैसी फ़िल्में शामिल हैं।</p> <p>फ़िल्म ‘ख़ुशबू’ का मंज़रनामा शरत्चन्द्र के उपन्यास ‘पंडित मोशाय’ से प्रेरित है लेकिन पूरी तरह उसी पर आधारित नहीं है। शरत्चन्द्र के उपन्यास में प्लाट बहुत लम्बा और पेचीदा है लेकिन फ़िल्म ‘ख़ुशबू’ का मंज़रनामा लघु और प्रवाहमय है जो पाठकों को अपनी रौ में बहा ले जाने में सक्षम है। इसमें सबसे ज़्यादा प्रभावित करता है बृन्दावन और कुसुम का आपसी रिश्ता, जो रवायती कहानियों से काफ़ी अलग है। कुसुम की ख़ुद्दारी उसे बृन्दावन से अलग भी रखती है और जोड़े भी रखती है, इसलिए कि वह उसका हक़ है।</p> <p>पाठक इस मंज़रनामे को पढ़कर औपन्यासिक कृति का आस्वाद प्राप्त करेंगे।

यह पुस्तक उपनिवेशीय भारत की एक अनूठी घटना पर आधारित है। बाईस वर्ष की एक युवती ने असाधारण विद्रोह करते हुए उस विवाह को मानने से इनकार कर दिया जिसमें उसे मात्र ग्यारह वर्ष की उम्र में झोंक दिया गया था।
उसके पति ने अपने वैवाहिक अधिकारों की प्राप्ति के लिए बम्बई उच्च न्यायालय का दरवाज़ा खटखटा दिया। उसके इस क़दम ने रख्माबाई के संकल्प को और भी दृढ़ कर दिया—देशी परम्पराओं और उपनिवेशीय क़ानून-व्यवस्था के संयुक्त दमन के विरोध का संकल्प।
मुक़दमा 1884 के शुरू में दायर किया गया। अगले वर्ष इसमें हुए पहले फ़ैसले के आते ही इसने एक सामाजिक नाटक का रूप धारण कर लिया।
इस युवा विद्रोहिणी की विजय या पराजय पर एक विकृत पारिवारिक-सामाजिक व्यवस्था का भविष्य टिका हुआ था।
रख्माबाई का विद्रोह एक असाधारण घटना थी। इससे पहले कभी किसी स्त्री ने ऐसे क्रान्तिकारी साहस और संघर्ष-शक्ति का परिचय नहीं दिया था।
रख्माबाई के मुक़दमे के दौरान यह बात पूरी तरह स्पष्ट हो गई कि सर्वोच्च उपनिवेशीय न्यायपालिका की प्रवृत्ति स्त्रियों के साथ भेदभाव करनेवाली सामाजिक परम्पराओं और सम्बन्धों को बनाए रखने की थी।
रख्माबाई के विद्रोह से शुरू हुई यह बहस अभी अप्रासंगिक नहीं हुई है, जैसाकि हम इस पुस्तक के उपसंहार में देखेंगे। इस तरह के विद्रोह को आज भी मर्यादाओं के उल्लंघन के रूप में देखा जाता है।
आज हम पीछे मुड़कर देख पाने की स्थिति में हैं और उन सीमाओं को अधिक आसानी से पहचान सकते हैं जिनके भीतर रमाबाई और रख्माबाई जैसे हमारे पथ-प्रदर्शकों की चेतना काम करती थी।
