- Description: नारी-स्वातंत्र्य के लिए प्रतिभूत इस युग में सुपरिचित लेखिका मधु भादुड़ी का यह उपन्यास कुछ बुनियादी सवाल उठाता है। नारी विवाहित हो या अविवाहित—आर्थिक स्वावलम्बन उसके लिए बहुत ज़रूरी है, लेकिन आर्थिक रूप से स्वावलम्बी स्त्रियाँ भी क्या इस समाज में अपने आत्मसम्मान, स्वाभिमान और स्वातंत्र्य को बनाए रख पा रही हैं? सुखवादी सपनों में खोई रहनेवाली पढ़ी-लिखी निशा अगर एक ‘सम्पन्न घर की बहू’ बनने के अपने और अपने माता-पिता के व्यामोह का शिकार हो जाती है, और अनपढ़ लाजो अगर कठोर श्रम के बावजूद अपने शराबी पति की ‘सेवा का धर्म’ निबाहे जा रही है, तो यह मसला शिक्षा और श्रम से ही हल होनेवाला नहीं है। इसके लिए तो वस्तुत: उसे अपने गले-सड़े संस्कारों से लड़ना होगा। यही कारण है कि लेखिका ने सुषमा जैसे नारी-चरित्र की रचना की है। सुषमा इस उपन्यास की केन्द्रीय पात्र है, जिसके आत्मसंघर्ष में सम्भवत: नारी-स्वातंत्र्य के सही मायने निहित हैं, क्योंकि इसे वह स्त्री के बाह्य व्यक्तित्व और व्यवहार तक ही सीमित नहीं मानती, बल्कि यह चीज़ उसकी अस्मिता और समूची मानसिक संरचना के साथ जुड़ी हुई है।
