महमूद फ़ारूक़ी, अनुषा रिजवी और उनके मुटूठी-भर साथियों ने दुनिया को दिखा दिया कि दास्तान अब भी ज़िन्दा है, या ज़िन्दा की जा सकती है। लेकिन उसके लिए दो चीज़ों की ज़रूरत थी; एक तो कोई ऐसा शख़्स जो दास्तान को बख़ूबी जानता हो और उससे मोहब्बत करता हो। ऐसा शख़्स आज बिलकुल मादूम नहीं तो बहुत ही कामयाब ज़रूर है। दूसरी चीज़ जो अहिया-ए-दास्तान के लिए लाजिम थी, वह था ऐसा शख़्स जो उर्दू ख़ूब जानता हो, फ़ारसी बकदरे-ज़रूरत जानता हो, और उसे अदाकारी में भी ख़ूब दर्क हो, यानी उसे बयानिया और मकालमा को ड्रामाई तीर पर अदा करने पर कुदरत हो। उसे उर्दू अदब की, दास्तान की, और ख़ास कर के हमारी ख़ुशनसीबी तसव्वुर करना चाहिए कि दास्तानगोई के दुबारा जन्म की दास्तान के लिए नागुज़िर मोतज़क्किरह वाला किरदार एक वक़्त में और एक जगह जमा हो गए। महमूद फ़ारूक़ी और मोहम्मद काजिम अपनी कही हुई दास्तानों पर मुश्तमिल एक और किताब बाज़ार में ला रहे हैं तो दास्तानगोई का एक जदीद रूप भी सामने आ चुका है।

वक़्त का तक़ाज़ा था कि अमीर हमज़ा के मिज़ाज के अलावा और भी तरह की दास्तानें लोगों को सुनाई जाएँ। इसकी शुरुआत तो 2007 में ही हो गई थी जब मैं और अनुषा ने मिलकर तक़सीम-ए-हिन्द पे एक दास्तान मुरत्तब की थी जो पहली जिल्द में शामिल है। अमीर हमज़ा की दास्तानों का जादू हमेशा सर चढ़कर बोला है और आगे भी बोलता रहेगा। मगर आज के ज़माने में उन दास्तानों के अलावा भी बहुत से ऐसे अफ़साने हैं जो सुनाए जाने का तक़ाज़ा करते हैं। इसलिए रवायती दास्तानों को इख़्तियार करने के साथ-साथ मैंने और ऐसी चीज़ें तशकील दी हैं जिन्हें दास्तानजादियाँ कहें तो नामुनासिब ना होगा। ये दास्तानजादियाँ बिलवासता हमारे अहद को और दीगर सच्चाइयों और पहलुओं पर रोशनी डालती हैं जिन्हें हमारे सामईन और नाज़िरीन बेतकल्लुफ़ समझ सकते हैं।
