मूर्धन्य साहित्यकार जयशंकर प्रसाद का साहित्य सर्वसुलभ है लेकिन उनके ‘तुमुल कोलाहल’ भरे जीवन की कहानी से दुनिया अब तक प्रायः अपरिचित रही है। ऐसे में, प्रसाद के महाप्रयाण के आठ दशक बाद उनकी जीवन-कथा को पहली बार पूरे विस्तार से प्रस्तुत करनेवाले उपन्यास ‘कंथा’ का महत्त्व स्वयंसिद्ध है।
सुपरिचित कथाकार श्याम बिहारी श्यामल ने अपनी इस कृति में प्रसाद का जीवन-चित्र तो आँका ही है, बीसवीं सदी के आरम्भिक दौर के उस पूरे परिदृश्य को उसके सम्पूर्ण रूप-गुण, राग-रंग और घात-प्रतिघातों के साथ साकार कर दिया है, जिसमें प्रसाद का कृती-व्यक्तित्व विकसित हुआ था।
श्यामल ने इस उपन्यास में प्रसाद के युग का जो चित्र उकेरा है, उसमें मदन मोहन मालवीय, महावीरप्रसाद द्विवेदी, प्रेमचन्द, सूर्यकान्त त्रिपाठी ‘निराला’, शिवपूजन सहाय, महादेवी वर्मा, रामचन्द्र शुक्ल, केशव प्रसाद मिश्र, रायकृष्ण दास, विनोदशंकर व्यास, कृष्णदेव प्रसाद गौड़ आदि अनेक विभूतियों को कथा-चरित्र के रूप में सक्रिय देखना पाठक के लिए अविस्मरणीय अनुभव होगा।
प्रसाद के युग को रचने के लिए इस उपन्यास में लेखक ने जिस भाषा और दृश्यबद्ध शैली को गढ़ा है, वह न सिर्फ़ उसकी विशिष्ट रचनाशीलता का प्रमाण है, बल्कि पाठकों को भी विरल अनुभव प्रदान करनेवाला है।
