The story is based on a historical figure, a real Clarinda, the widow of a Maratha Brahmin, who had been one of the King's servants in Tanjore, and after her husband's death became theconcubine of an English oficer of the name Lyttleton. She asked Rev. Schwartz to baptize her when he visited Palayamkottai. He refused, however, because of her 'irregular union'. Some years laterm after her husband's death, she was accepted into the chruch. From these bare facts, Madhaviah creates a fictionlized early life of Clarinda as she grows up in the principality of Tanjore. The imagined story of this unusual woman, who gradually takes control of her life, gives Madhaviah the opportunity to work out some of his favourite themes: woman's education, the question of sati and widow re-marriage and the encounter between Hinduism and Christianity. The cross cultural, inter-religious relationship which is at the heart of the novel is unusual and profoundly interesting.

- Description: Maharajadhiraja Rameshwar Singh (16 January 1860 – 3 July 1929) was the 21st ruler of the Khandawala dynasty of Darbhanga in the Mithila region from 1898 till his death. On the one hand, he was a scholar of Indian scriptures and worshiper of divine powers, on the other hand, he was proficient in the English language and an efficient administrator. As the president of Bharat Dharma Mahamandal, he propagated Sanatan Dharma all over India and strengthened it socially and religiously. For the promotion of education in Mithila as well as social political awakening, he established a press and started a newspaper Mithila Mihir. Many important books were published under his supervision. Maharaj Rameshwar Singh established many factories for economic development and played an important role in the establishment of Kashi Hindu University. The ruins of the grand palace of Rajnagar in the present Madhubani district and many grand temples in that complex remind us of his glory. He was made a Knight Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire (KCIE) and was promoted to a Knight Grand Commander (GCIE) and a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire, Civil Division (KBE).

- Description: ग़ुलामी के दौरान पंजाब पर अकल्पनीय अत्याचार के प्रतिवाद में रचित तथा ब्रिटिश शासन द्वारा प्रतिबन्धित और ज़ब्त रचनाएँ ‘जलियाँवाला बाग़ की कराहें’ पुस्तक जलियाँवाला बाग़ के नरसंहार की अतिशय वेदना और अंग्रेज़ी जुल्मों की व्यथा-कथा है जिसे हिन्दुस्तानियों ने अपनी आत्मा पर झेला, अपनी आँखों से देखा और साहित्यकारों ने अपनी क़लम से उकेरा। यह जनता का, जनता के द्वारा और जनता के लिए लिखा गया साहित्य है जो एक सदी तक अन्वेषकों की नज़रों से लगभग छिपा रहा। इन रचनाकारों ने अंग्रेज़ी राज की प्रताड़नाएँ सहते हुए औपनिवेशिक काल की त्रासद स्थितियों को कलमबद्ध किया। रचनाएँ मौखिक यात्रा करती हुईं जन-चेतना के उद्देश्य तक पहुँचती रहीं। पुस्तक में कुल नौ अध्याय हैं जिनमें जलियाँवाला बाग़ हत्याकांड के बाद रचित वे नाटक, कविताएँ, दोहे, ठुमरी, लावणी, क़व्वाली, ग़ज़ल आदि सम्मिलित हैं जो अलग-अलग पुस्तिकाओं में प्रकाशित हुईं। लगभग सभी विधाओं में रचित यह साहित्य जलियाँवाला बाग़ की पृष्ठभूमि से लेकर हर छोटी-बड़ी घटना, अंग्रेज़ों की क्रूरता, जुल्म और यातनाओं, लोगों की बेबसी, लाचारी, सामाजिक दशा-दुर्दशा का निर्भीक और वास्तविक विवरण प्रस्तुत करता है तो दूसरी तरफ़ साहस से उठ खड़े होने का आह्वान भी करता है। इनमें नृशंस हत्याओं के साथ-साथ हरे-भरे पेड़-पौधों की उखड़ी-जली छालों, घास चरती हुईं गाय-भैंसों का चरते-चरते मारे जाना, तोते, कोयल और मैना आदि पक्षियों तक का भी गोलियों से डरकर मरने का मार्मिक चित्रण है। इन रचनाओं की सत्यता पर कोई सन्देह इसलिए नहीं किया जा सकता कि आधिकारिक ऐतिहासिक दस्तावेज़ों में भी किसी न किसी रूप में इनका ज़िक्र है और इतिहास की पुस्तकों में भी इन्हें प्राय: उसी रूप में अभिव्यक्त किया गया है।

- Description: ಲೇಖಕಿ ಗಾಯತ್ರಿ ರಾಜ್ ಅವರ ಆಮ್ರಪಾಲಿ-ಎಂಬುದು ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ. ವೈಶಾಲಿನಗರದ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಸುಂದರ ಯುವತಿ ಆಮ್ರಪಾಲಿ ವೈಶಾಲಿನಗರದ ರಾಜ ಮನುದೇವ ಆಕೆಯನ್ನು ಕಾಮುಕ ಕಣ್ಣಿನಿಂದ ನೋಡಿ ವರಿಸಲು ಹಾತೊರೆಯುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಆಮ್ರಪಾಲಿಯ ಪ್ರೇಮಿ ಪುಷ್ಪಕುಮಾರರನ್ನು ಮದುವೆಯಾದ ದಿನವೇ ಕೊಲ್ಲಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಆದರೂ, ಆತನ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ಕೈಗೊಡಲಿಲ್ಲ ನಗರದ ವಧುವನ್ನಾಗಿಸಲು ಸಂಚು ಹೂಡುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಈ ಮಧ್ಯೆ, ಮಗದ ರಾಜ್ಯದ ಅರಸ ಬಿಂಬಸಾರನು ವಿಣೆ ಕಲಿಸುವ ನೆಪದಲ್ಲಿ ವೇಷ ಮರೆಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಆಮ್ರಪಾಲಿ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಇರುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಅವರ ಮಧ್ಯೆ ಪ್ರೇಮಾಂಕುರವಾಗಿ ಮಗು ಸಹ ಜನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ, ಆಮ್ರಪಾಲಿ, ಮಗದ ರಾಜ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ತೆರಳು ನಿರಾಕರಿಸುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಇದನ್ನು ತಂದೆಗೆ ಮಾಡಿದ ಅವಮಾನ ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿದ ಬಿಂಬಸಾರನ ಮಗನು ವೈಶಾಲಿ ರಾಜ್ಯದ ಮೇಲೆ ದಂಡೆತ್ತಿ ನಾಶಪಡಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಆ ಮಗನೂ (ಅಜಾತಶತ್ರು) ಸಹ ಆಮ್ರಪಾಲಿಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಮನಸು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಆದರೆ, ಆಮ್ರಪಾಲಿ ಒಪ್ಪುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಕೊನೆಗೆ ಬುದ್ಧನ ಶಿಷ್ಯೆಯಾಗಿ ಹೊರಟು ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾಳೆ ಎಂಬುದು ಆಮ್ರಪಾಲಿಯ ಕಥೆ. ಈ ಅಂಶವನ್ನೇ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯವಾಗಿಸಿದ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಇದು.

- Description: राजगोपाल सिंह वर्मा इतिहास मर्मज्ञ तो हैं ही, वे इतिहास के अनूठे, लीक से हटकर चले महिला पात्रों को अपने कथा-साहित्य का विषय बनाते रहे हैं। वे महीन से महीन तथ्यों की कीलों पर कथा की बारीक मनोवैज्ञानिक जरदोजी करते हैं। कथा है तो मन और उसके खेल भी होंगे। यह मन और मस्तिष्क अकसर ऐतिहासिक उपन्यासों में अनुपस्थित मिलता है, लेकिन राजगोपाल सिंह वर्मा तथ्यों के घटनाक्रमों के चक्र में भी मुन्नी बेगम के अन्तर्द्वन्द्व और बौद्धिक-राजनैतिक दाँव-पेंच, व्यवहारकुशलता के चलते ईस्ट इंडिया कम्पनी के अफसरों से सौहार्द के दृश्य इस उपन्यास को जीवन्त बनाते हैं। मुन्नी बेगम, मीर जाफर की पत्नी रही है, गद्दारी के इतिहास की सियाही मुन्नी के हिस्से भी आ सकती थी, मगर वह व्यवहारकुशल रही। लेखक स्वीकार करते हैं कि मुन्नी बेगम राष्ट्रभक्त किसी तरह भी नहीं थी। सो, नायिका होने के वे उदात्त तत्व उसमें न हों, मगर एक अनाथ, बंजारा नर्तकी के पहले बेमन से मीर जाफर की पत्नी बनने, फिर अपने वजूद को पहचानने, जाफर की मृत्यु के बाद अपने अस्तित्व को बनाए रखने की कूटनीतिक व्यवहारकुशलता उसे नायिका बनने की सलाहियत जरूर देती है। एक ऐसी स्त्री जिसे लेकर ब्रिटिश संसद में भारत के सर्वशक्तिशाली, सम्पन्न और कार्यकुशल गवर्नर-जनरल वारेन हेस्टिंग्स जैसे व्यक्ति पर महाभियोग चला हो, मुन्नी बेगम के नाम की गूँज उठी हो; उसमें कुछ खास तो होगा ही। —मनीषा कुलश्रेष्ठ
