इसका रचना-काल द्वितीय महायुद्ध का अंतिम काल है, जबकि मानव संहार के पीड़ित समाचारों को पढ़कर आचार्यजी का हृदय हाहाकार कर रहा था। युद्ध के दिन थे, सब चीजें बेहद महँगी और दुर्लभ हो रही थीं। लिखने के लिए कागज और जलाने के लिए मिट्टी का तेल भी उन्हें मुश्किल से मिलता था। उन दिनों हमारे मकान में बिजली नहीं थी। टीन की छत के तीन कमरे और फूँस का एक गोल छप्पर ही हम शाहदरे की भूमि में बना पाए थे। उसी छप्पर में बैठकर रात को मिट्टी का दिया जलाकर उन्होंने इन उपन्यास का आरंभ किया था।

कोश के शब्दों का अर्थ देते समय यह ध्यान रखा गया है कि जहाँ तक हो सके अर्थ ऐसे हों, जिनसे पाठकों को ठीक-ठीक आशय के अलावा यह भी ज्ञात हो सके कि उन शब्दों का मूल क्या है अथवा वे किन शब्दों के परिवर्तित रूप हैं।
