- Description: प्रो. हौली पिछले कई दशकों से भक्ति और हिन्दू परम्परा के अन्य पहलुओं पर विचारोत्तेजक काम करते रहे हैं। केनेथ ब्रायंट के साथ मिलकर उन्होंने सूरदास के पदों की प्रामाणिकता और पाठ-निर्धारण पर काम किया है। प्रस्तुत पुस्तक मूल अंग्रेज़ी में 2005 में प्रकाशित हुई थी। इस बीच नई खोजें हुई हैं, भक्ति-विमर्श में नए प्रश्न, नई शब्दावलियाँ आई हैं। प्रो. हौली ने पुस्तक की सामग्री को नई खोजों की रोशनी में अद्यतन किया है, हालाँकि ऐसा करते समय भी वे अपने मूल तर्क, आग्रहों और पद्धति को बनाए रहे हैं। सूरदास रचित पदों की संख्या ठीक-ठीक लाख नहीं तो हजारों में माननेवालों के लिए यह बहुत चौंकानेवाली बात होगी कि प्रो. हौली इनमें से केवल चार सौ तैंतीस को इस अर्थ में प्रामाणिक मानते हैं कि वे सूरदास से सम्बन्धित प्राचीनतम पांडुलिपियों में प्राप्त होते हैं। हौली इस पुस्तक में सूरदास, मीराँ और कबीर से जुड़े विशिष्ट सवालों—समय, रचनाओं की प्रामाणिकता, संवेदना का स्वभाव, लोक-स्मृति में उनका स्थान—आदि पर तो विचार करते ही हैं, वे इनके बहाने भक्ति-संवेदना से जुड़े व्यापक प्रश्नों पर भी विचार करते हैं। वे उस विमर्श में भी हिस्सा लेते हैं, जो भक्ति-संवेदना के ऐतिहासिक और दार्शनिक रूप से अभूतपूर्व पहलुओं को समझने की कोशिश करता रहा है। निर्गुण ही नहीं, यह बात तुलसी, सूर, मीराँ जैसे सगुण कवियों के बारे में भी सच है कि उनकी कविता आचार्यों द्वारा कर दिए गए ब्रह्म-निरूपण का जन-सुलभ मुहावरे में प्रचार करने के लिए नहीं रची गई है। वह सचमुच स्वायत्त और नवाचार सम्पन्न 'निज ब्रह्म विचार' है। इस निज ब्रह्म विचार और इसकी काव्याभिव्यक्ति के तीन सर्वाधिक मनोहर स्वरों को सुनते हुए प्रो. जॉन स्ट्रैटन हौली बहुत ही विचारोत्तेजक निष्कर्षों तक पहुँचे हैं, जिनमें से कुछ इस पुस्तक के माध्यम से आपके सामने मौजूद हैं।
