इसी पुस्तक में शामिल अपने वक्तव्य में रमेशचन्द्र शाह लिखते हैं, ‘निर्मल जी सभा-संगोष्ठियों में शिरकत करते हुए जितना सबके साथ होते थे, उतना ही अपने साथ। अन्तर्मुखता की शर्तों पर ही वे पर्याप्त बहिर्मुखता का भी निर्वाह किस ख़ूबी से कर पाते थे, एक समूची पीढ़ी इसकी गवाह है। यही ख़ूबी उनके ‘पत्रों’ में भी है।... सेल्फ़ रिवीलिंग, स्व-संवेदी, आत्मोद्घाटक; किन्तु स्व-केन्द्रित कदापि नहीं।’
