यह किताब इस दिशा में एक बड़ी, और गम्भीर पहलकदमी है।
हिन्दी में पहली बार मंच पर सक्रिय युवा अभिनेता और अभिनेत्रियाँ यहाँ अपने ऐसे अनुभवों को साझा कर रहे हैं जो खुद उनके लिए भी गहरी अन्तर्यात्राओं की तरह रहे। इन्हें पढ़कर मालूम होता है कि जिसे हम ‘एक्टिंग’ कहकर आगे बढ़ जाते हैं, वह ‘एक्टर’ के लिए उसके अस्तित्व-बोध के स्तर पर घटित होनेवाला कितना बड़ा संघर्ष होता है; व्यक्तित्वान्तरण की वह प्रक्रिया उन्हें कितना मुक्त करती है, और कितना कसती है।
और यह हम पढ़ते हैं एक सजीव, धड़कते हुए, अत्यन्त ईमानदार गद्य के रूप में जिसे वही सम्भव कर पाता है जो अनुभव के कंटकाकीर्ण पथ पर नंगे पैर और खुली आँखों चला हो, जो प्रक्रिया का भोक्ता भी रहा हो और साक्षी भी।
अभिनय-जीवन के इन संस्मरणों को पढ़कर हम रंग-दर्शक के रूप में समृद्ध होते हैं। अभिनय के विद्यार्थियों के लिए तो इनसे गुजरना किसी ‘वर्कशॉप’ में होने जैसा है।

‘तुम्हारा नामवर’ के पहले खंड में परिजनों को लिखे पत्र हैं। मझले भाई रामजी सिंह को सम्बोधित पत्र अनेक दृष्टियों से विशिष्ट हैं। इन पत्रों में आधुनिक एवं पारम्परिक जीवन के द्वन्द्वों के दबावों की अनेक झलकें संकेत रूप में मौजूद हैं। सबसे छोटे भाई काशीनाथ सिंह को लिखे पत्र उन स्थितियों और जीवन-प्रसंगों पर रोशनी डालते हैं जिनमें नामवर सिंह का निर्माण हुआ। व्यक्तिगत पत्रों में बेटी समीक्षा को दार्जिलिंग से लिखे गए दस पत्रों का एक अलग ही महत्त्व है। अठहत्तर वर्ष की अवस्था में गहन भावनाओं से भरे हुए ये पत्र ‘चिट्ठी भी हैं और डायरी भी’। इन्हें हिन्दी की हँसमुख और दिलख़ुश गद्य परम्परा में सम्मान के साथ रखा जा सकता है।
दूसरे खंड में साहित्य-सहचरों—केदारनाथ अग्रवाल, मुक्तिबोध, राजेन्द्र यादव, विश्वनाथ त्रिपाठी, रवीन्द्र कालिया, कमला प्रसाद, नंदकिशोर नवल और महेन्द्रनाथ राय—को लिखे गए पत्र संकलित हैं। इन पत्रों में एक पाठक के रूप में नामवर जी अपने समय-साहित्य के विभिन्न मुद्दों पर न सिर्फ़ बातचीत की एक वृहद् ज़मीन तैयार करते दिखते हैं, बल्कि लेखक व सम्पादक के रूप में अपनी ज़िम्मेदारी भी निभाते नज़र आते हैं। तीसरे खंड में श्रीनारायण पांडेय के नाम लिखे गए पत्रों को व्यक्तिगत-पारिवारिक पत्रों की शृंखला में ही रखा जा सकता है। पांडेय जी 1952-1954 में काशी हिन्दू विश्वविद्यालय में नामवर जी के छात्र रहे हैं। ये पत्र काशीनाथ सिंह के नाम पत्रों की ही तरह महत्त्वपूर्ण हैं। नामवर जी के व्यक्तित्व के छिपे हुए रूपों के साथ ही उनके राजनीतिक, सामाजिक और साहित्यिक विचारों की गम्भीर झलक इन पत्रों में मौजूद है।
इस पुस्तक से बाहर भी अभी हज़ारों पत्र लोगों के निजी संग्रह में मौजूद होंगे। उन्हें भी प्राप्त होने के बाद अगले संस्करण में शामिल कर लिया जाएगा। बावजूद इसके ‘तुम्हारा नामवर’ में संकलित पत्र हिन्दी आलोचना में ‘दूसरी परम्परा की खोज’ करनेवाले नामवर सिंह के जीवन-अनुभव से निकला वह जीवन-दर्शन हैं जिनके आलोक में केवल अतीत, वर्तमान ही नहीं बल्कि भविष्य का भी बहुत कुछ पढ़ा, समझा और रचा जा सकता है।
