अलका सरावगी अपने उपन्यासों में कॉस्मोपॉलिटन कलकत्ता की नई-नई गाथाएँ लेकर आती रही हैं। कलकत्ता के अलग-अलग काल-खंडों का, एक ही काल में रह रही अलग-अलग जीवन-स्थितियों का, अलग-अलग धर्मों और संस्कृतियों के टकराव और सामंजस्य का, उसके नए-नए कोणों और रहस्यों का, उसके दिल की दरारों का उत्खनन ‘कलकत्ता कॉस्मोपॉलिटन : दिल और दरारें’ में भी जारी है।
यह ‘सुनील बोस’ की गाथा है जो एक मुस्लिम लड़की ‘दीबा’ से निकाह के लिए धर्मान्तरण करके ‘मोहम्मद दानियाल’ बन गया है। एक निम्नवर्गीय जीवन-स्थिति में बहुत सारे भीतरी और बाहरी संघर्षों के बीच नौकरियाँ और मकान बदलते हुए अपनी पहचान छुपाते या दूसरी पहचान ओढ़ते हुए उनका जीवन आगे बढ़ रहा है। इसी जीवन में ‘सुनील बोस’ और ‘मोहम्मद दानियाल’ के द्वन्द्व और द्वैत के रास्ते उपन्यास में सच और झूठ के बीच का फ़रेब भी मारक और मार्मिक होता जाता है।
उपन्यास में इस मुख्य कथा के समानान्तर कलकत्ता की अँधेरी और उमस-भरी गलियों में रहनेवाले लड़ते-जूझते लोगों की कथाएँ भी चलती रहती हैं, जिनके जीवन में ग़लत और सही का हिसाब कब जीवन के अभावों और सपनों, यथार्थ और लालसाओं के बीच के तनाव का हिसाब बन जाता है, यह पता ही नहीं चलता। इसके बीच तमाम चरित्रों के ओढ़े हुए व्यक्तित्व जहाँ तार-तार होते हैं और हम उनके भीतर का ग़लीज़ देख पाते हैं वहीं अनेक चरित्रों में इनसानी गरिमा और ऊँचाई भी बारम्बार प्रकट होती है।
